BT has kept its promise by offering the BT Broadband Accelerator (iPlate) device for free to any consumers and businesses that are likely to benefit (
original news). The iPlate is a useful plug and play 'bell wire' line filter that usually retails for under £10 and can help reduce interference on a telephone line, making broadband both faster and more stable.
BT Statement:[BT estimate's] that around 9m UK homes have the potential to benefit from installing this simple but effective device. Our benchmark survey of 36,000 lines showed that, on average, filtered lines achieved speed increases of around 1.5Mbps, though some lines achieved speed increases as much as 4Mbps.
The I-Plate can help customers whose broadband line is susceptible to ‘dropping out’ by increasing the stability of their broadband connection, two factors which influence whether or not a customer’s line can support a high quality IPTV service.
The survey also found that the I-Plate can help some customers with ‘long lines’ who have previously been unable to support broadband because they live just beyond the reach of the exchange.
http://www.bt.com/accelerator BT originally pledged to offer the iPlate for free back in June, during its 20Mbps broadband speed upgrade announcement. However there will still be a postage charge of £1.20 and the offer is ONLY available to customers of BT's Total Broadband products; everybody else will have to spend around £8 to get one.
It should be noted that the iPlate won't work for everybody and BT's Accelerator site (linked above) includes some helpful details for identifying when and where it will or won't work. Those able to install one should consider doing so as it does provide a benefit (note: cable customers do not need one).
