ISP Vispa Internet UK has acquired the broadband DSL (ADSL) customer base of Scotland based Abel Internet, a former rival. The move means that more than 700 business and residential customers have now been transferred from Abel to Vispa.

BT Openreach, which is responsible for ensuring that all rival operators have equality of access to BT's local network, has today announced January 2010 trials of next generation Fibre-to-the-Premise ( FTTP ) technology in “Brownfield” sites. However they've been issuing briefings about it for several months so it's not really all that new.

New research has revealed that almost three-quarters (73%) of adults claim their UK broadband provider fails to explain the product sufficiently. Despite Ofcom guidance on making broadband speeds clear to consumers at the point of sale, one in six (17%) adults added that their ISP did not explain the technical aspects - such as speed - at all when buying the service.

New Cisco sponsored research, which was conducted by the University of Oxford's Said Business School and University of Oviedo, has found that the UK placed a lowly 25th when ranked against 66 other countries in terms of broadband network quality. The global average download speed was also revealed to be 4.75Mbps, with uploads averaging 1.3Mbps.
