Sometimes the debate over illegal UK broadband file sharing (P2P) can overshadow the fact that there are a lot of legal alternatives to getting the same content and indeed many are actually quite well priced. It is benchmarked by price comparisons for the X Factor finalist’s charity single and the new Leona Lewis album. Only if you are looking a a classical or "arty" release; for your average CD with 12/14+ tracks the price is comparable to buying the physical object, which can then be ripped to whatever quality level and with whichever codec you want.
When pricing reflects this, and allows you to listen to the track on something other than the PC you downloaded it with, then it might take off.

Napster is by far the best and most cost effective deal out there. However, in addition to the £5 /mo unlimited streaming, you also get 5 free MP3 downloads per month to keep forever.

Also, with Napster you can purchase tracks for 79p each using the in-built store, and purchase albums from £7.99 by the same method.

the first thing that puts me off is crappy third party software that you MUST use on their service
and secondly websites selling super cheap mp3s also makes me think they just downloaded it for free and are charging you for it

You forgot to mention that we7 offers unlimited free streaming (with adverts), free downloading (with adverts) and charged downloading (without adverts).
The streaming also comes without adverts for a 24h period after a certain amount of usage.
Oh, and because it's browser based, there's no need to download any pesky softwear.
With loads of other stuff to play with (playlists, magazine, gig alerts, ticket purchace etc.) on their site, I recommend.
