UK ISP Be Broadband has revamped its up to 8Mbps budget BE Value package by reducing the price from £13.50 inc. VAT per month to just £7.50 as standard; this follows the success of its recent "half price" promotion. In addition the package now offers a 40GB (GigaByte) monthly download allowance instead of its old "unlimited" one.

Otherwise the package remains almost identical to the old one with upload speeds of 1.3Mbps, a 12 month minimum contract term, free ADSL2+ wireless router modem, free 24/7 support and of course a free connection.

Tom Williams, Head of Operations at BE, said:

"The trends we’re seeing are for no traffic management allowing more freedom and of course lower prices. Our members demand the freedom to prioritise and think for themselves, not have their broadband provider do it for them. We believe there a lot of customers that will leap at the chance to get a service that doesn’t slow down based on the content of their downloads but don’t use the internet enough to justify an unlimited product."

BE remains somewhat of a rarity among even many unbundled providers because it's not only cheap but also offers good performance and a reasonably strong quality of customer support. Still, some might be concerned that BE's latest price could be a little too cheap to support. It's also unclear whether existing customers will gain the new price, though we suspect they'll have to wait for an end to their existing contract.

Except most people prefer to move away from Tiscali as it's one of the lowest rating big ISPs.

My relative is on Be Value and they have been told they will have to go on paying £14 per month as an existing customer and that the £7.50 per month price is only for new customers. Yet the Be website just showss £7.50 as the price for all Be Value customers and does not show £7.50 as an introdutory price for new customers only.

This is pretty shoddy behaviour by BE's marketing department. Why should existing customers getting the same service who are out of their 12 month contract have to pay more than a new customer freshly joining Be. Why should my relative not just leave Be Unlimited and move to TalkTalk instead if this is how Be rewards them for being a longstanding loyal customer of the company.mad

I prefer personal experience of ratings. If most moved away they wouldn't be one of the larger suppliers.

I have had no problems with my connection. Before TalkTalk bought them I had a problem with their administration, but the connection speed depends on the quality of the telephone line rather than who is providing the service, and it flows through the same wires who ever you pay the bill to.

To all you Tiscali lovers: their Indian based customer service is shocking and I took myself and clients away to other ISPs purely for that reason. I'd rather pay a pound or two more and get an English based call centre.
