UK Broadband ISPs Impacted by LINX and BT Congestion Problems

Posted: 12th Jan, 2010 By: MarkJ
Congestion problems at both the London Internet Exchange (LINX) and from within BT's 21CN and 20CN networks are causing speed and latency problems for customers of broadband ISPs in the UK. The situation with LINX in particular is known to have impacted a number of ISPs during Sunday and Monday after a congestion issue between Telehouse East and Telehouse North cropped up.

It's understood from LINX that "two 10Gb ports on switch16 (Telehouse East) are not forwarding traffic but are receiving traffic" and needed to be replaced, which should have occurred late last night. There was some disruption earlier this morning but it is hopefully now improving.

Elsewhere broadband provider AAISP reports that there continue to be "serious issues within BT and are definitely affecting many ISPs", especially with the operators newest 21CN platform. We heard many gripes about this last year from ISPs and it seems not to be going away. If the BT service to ISPs runs into trouble then it is the providers that typically take all the blame.

January 12th Status Update from AAISP

"As more and more ISPs move to 21CN (as BT are effectively forcing them to do) we will see more and more issues and they will affect more and more customers. We are working hard to encourage BT to provide a working network, but after some years of trying, we have not succeeded.
21CN Guildford exchange: All lines congestion during day and packet loss in evening
21CN L-WAT BRASs: All lines high latency (congestion) during the working day
20CN Birmingham BRASs: All lines, some congestion and latency during working day.
L-WAT is very bad now, and we have been advised dates for a fix for this several times now. We have opened hundreds of faults, but BT have cancelled them as they cannot cope. We expect to update our systems to automatically re-raise cancelled faults in future. Opening faults seems one of teh few ways to motivate BT to fix faults (unsurprisingly)

Guildford lines are also very bad, but packet loss rather than high latency. This is a shaper in BT in a different place, and only jusrt reported.

Birmingham issue is not as bad as L-WAT and varies a lot from day to day - BT have given us a date of the 19th, if you can believe that."

This is not isolated to a single ISP and many that make use of the related BT platforms are being affected. Some of the problems have been going on for awhile now.
