ISP Orange UK (France Telecom) has issued its latest fourth quarter results to the end of December 2009, which shows that the provider is still rapidly bleeding broadband subscribers and has dropped from a total of 899,000 in Q3-2009 to 840,000 in Q4 (-59,000). That's a faster fall than the -55,000 lost between Q2 and Q3 of last year.

People who live in Northern Ireland are the UK's least satisfied broadband ISP users. A new price comparison site study has revealed that nearly one in five people (18%) in N.Ireland think their broadband service is "bad" or "terrible".

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has put the price of its Virgin Phone line (rental) service up by 99p per month, raising the total cost to £11.99. The move effectively means that any broadband or TV package that bundles the phone line service will now cost a little bit extra.

Two lords for the Liberal Democrat party (Lord Razzall and Lord Clement-Jones) have proposed new amendments to the Government's endlessly controversial Digital Economy Bill that would force UK broadband ISPs into blocking any website deemed to contain "a substantial proportion of [CONTENT]" that infringes copyright.

The boss of BT Openreach, which is responsible for ensuring that all rival ISPs have equality of access to BT's local UK network, has claimed that its fibre optic based up to 40Mbps FTTC broadband technology "can achieve peak information rates of 100Mbits/sec". He also warned that demand for peak data rates of 1Gbps (Gigabits per second), as touted by its rival Fibrecity ( i3 Group ) in Bournemouth, will eventually surface but probably not for "a long time" yet.

The UK Governments Minister for Digital Britain, Stephen Timms, has announced plans to get 7.5 million new internet users online by March 2014. This equates to a 60% target reduction in the 12.5 million people who are not currently online in the UK.
