orange logoISP Orange UK (France Telecom) has issued its latest fourth quarter results to the end of December 2009, which shows that the provider is still rapidly bleeding broadband subscribers and has dropped from a total of 899,000 in Q3-2009 to 840,000 in Q4 (-59,000). That's a faster fall than the -55,000 lost between Q2 and Q3 of last year.

The news appears to make a disappointing mockery of Orange UK's various attempts last year to turn its fixed line broadband fortunes around. The operator’s new range of 'up to' 20Mbps packages and claims of big service and support improvements appear to have had little impact.

4th Quarter 2009

Revenues from Home Communication Services decreased 14.9% on a comparable basis to 235 million euros (-24.2% on an historical basis) due to the 16.0% decline in the ADSL broadband customer base (840,000 customers at 31 December 2009). Added to this is the decrease in narrowband Internet revenues, with the number of customers (56,000 at 31 December 2009) falling more than 50% in one year.

It's hard to see how Orange can turn this situation around, though to be fair the operator has only put a minimal amount of effort into marketing its broadband services. More clearly defined packages and greater “unlimited” usage allowance honesty might be a good place to start.
