fast.co.ukBroadband ISP Fast.co.uk has today announced the launch of its new unbundled ( LLU ) 'up to' 24Mbps packages with an emphasis on faster speeds and enhanced performance for high end users. Fast's new entry package (24Mbps download / 1.3Mbps upload) allows users 200GB usage for £38.78 inc. VAT per month, while its premium option (24Mbps download / 2.3Mbps upload) provides 450GB at £45.83.

Fast.co.uk’s Mark Baker, said:

"Our move to LLU services will allow our high end users, both residential and business, to access a faster connection with greater usage allowances. The opportunity to work from the local exchanges opens up many possibilities for Fast’s customers in the future.

We’ve retained the features of our other packages, such as short 3-month contracts, no port blocking, unlimited email and full virus and spam filtering. This coupled with our UK based customer care team that can be contacted on a non-premium phone number and free LLU migrations, shows our genuine commitment to being the ISP of choice.

We have already seen much interest from users wanting the inherent benefits of LLU and also from those who want it installed as a backup line to existing BT network connections."

We note that a 3 month contract applies with both packages, which to the average consumer will appear to be quite expensive. However Fast.co.uk has earned itself a good reputation for quality and is clearly aiming at extremely heavy downloader’s with its new service.

The package could be a tough sell though because several unbundled rivals, such as Sky Broadband UK, already claim to offer "truly unlimited" packages for far less (£10) thanks to their economics of scale. Similarly Virgin Media has a 50Mbps Cable Modem based package for about the same price as Fast.co.uk's entry package.

Fast.co.uk has also hinted that it should be launching another new range of products sometime later this year, which will be based off BT Wholesale's up to 40Mbps FTTC technology.

I'd take a guess this would be using Be/O2's network via Fluidata? The only LLU provider that charges more for wholesale than retail. Genius ;)

At least using Fluid / BE the contention and latency is lower than BT. End of the day it's your choice, so enjoy the internet while it's open to all to use!

Remember you get what you pay for. Free or bundled free isn't always a better service.

Good night.
