Tonight's episode of the current affairs BBC TV show Panorama, which airs at 8:30pm on BBC One, is called 'Are the Net Police Coming for You?' and covers the impact that the Digital Economy Bill (DEB) could have on home broadband use.

Summary

A proposed new law is threatening to disconnect the millions of internet users who unlawfully download free music, films and TV. Jo Whiley looks at how broadband use at home may never be the same, and could even be cut off.

Panorama has a history of failing to get to grips with issues that can often be a lot more technical than they may first appear, such as the woefully inaccurate report on wireless (Wi-Fi) radiation. Never the less it will be interesting to see whether they understand the problems or only scratch the surface.

Elsewhere the Digital Economy Bill is currently undergoing the final stage of its third reading in the House of Lords. Readers can check out a live video stream here: http://tinyurl.com/ydocwp8 .

UPDATE - 5:30pm

The Bill has been passed and will now move over to the House of Commons for its first reading.

I have tried Peer Blocker to monitor IP connections to and from my PC and you would be surprised what connections come up, some of them pretty scary. I believe Windows should have a visual monitoring system so that people can know what their computers are being connected to.

the bill was bound to pass, after all we didnt have a choice.. so much for democracy, wonder how much the BPI and other organisations are topping up the government in backhanders.

should be against the law to make laws when you dont know the fundimentals of what your making laws about.

Although the program was fairly balanced, it predictably continued to peddle a couple of myths; that the only use for file-sharing software is theft, and that the music industry has been busting a gut to provide "compelling" alternatives. The second is the most ridiculous; no industry in recent history has had as long as the music business to change its business model, yet it resolutely refuses to engage with reality.

I personally loved the inclusion of the sites where you can do it so for the avoidance of doubt, if a kid didn't know how to do it, Aunty quite happily showed them typing the URLs in the browsers !

I wonder what the entertainment industry's next excuse will be once this bill is passed, people are cut off, web sites taken down and still there isn't any discernable increase in sales. I would place money on this being the they way it'll go.

The bill hasn't even passed yet but there are new P2P/Usenet aimed VPN services launching all the time. All this guff and DPI malarkey is going to technically redundant before it's law.
