The J.D. Power and Associates 2010 UK Fixed Line and Mobile Broadband ISP Customer Satisfaction Studies have both ranked O2 highest among its competitors for a second consecutive year. O2 achieved a score of 766 for fixed line broadband services and 653 for Mobile Broadband, besting rivals such as BT , PlusNet , TalkTalk and Virgin Media UK.

Pennines-based UK ISP ADSL24 confirms they have signed a deal with Murphx to consolidate over 5000 broadband customers with the wholesale connectivity carrier. Under the agreement customers will have access to a range of new broadband services targeted at both home and business users delivered over a mix of BT and LLU (unbundled) networks.

Mobile operator T-Mobile has announced that from 1st April 2010, for a limited time only, new customers can get over 50% off mobile broadband Pay As You Go (PAYG) USB sticks ("only £8.99") when bought with a £10 top up.

Ofcom has today concluded its investigation into the UK pay TV market and made several critical decisions. The changes would allow BSkyB to offer its commercial TV channels to terrestrial Freeview users, alongside a bundle of broadband and phone services, which was last proposed by Sky in 2007 (Picnic). However the Picnic product never made it to market because of a bitter dispute with the regulator (here).

The Labour Government MP for Exeter, Ben Bradshaw, has tabled a new draft Clause 18 (amendment that would force broadband ISPs to block websites containing copyright infringing material) for the Digital Economy Bill (DEB) in the hope that it will achieve "the same effect, while addressing the concerns expressed regarding the current clause.".

Plans by Universal Music and Virgin Media UK to launch a DRM-free music download and streaming service for its broadband ISP customers have hit yet another problem. The Merlin Network, a non-profit organisation charged with representing independent music companies, has been unable to reach a fair price with VM for its content.

UK ISP BT has today revealed the latest official list of 303 local telephone exchange locations where its new superfast (up to 100Mbps) fibre optic based broadband services ( FTTC , FTTH / P ) will soon become available from. The move is part of their £1.5bn programme to deliver next generation services into 10 million homes (40% coverage) by summer 2012.

Customers of several unbundled UK ISPs including Sky Broadband , Be Broadband , TalkTalk , UKOnline , Easynet and possibly more have been affected after vandals cut through a critical fibre cable. The issue has resulted in a significant outage of telephone and broadband services to exchanges in Dunstable, Hemel Hempstead, Leagrave and Luton.

A new Marsouin study of 2,000 broadband Internet users in Brittany (France) has revealed that illegal file sharing behaviour has increased by 3% since the Hadopi "three-strikes law" was passed in October 2009. However Hadopi itself is yet to be fully introduced.

Broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold ( AAISP ) has announced that punters using the Santa-Fe coffee shop in Bracknell for free broadband access will now do so via Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). The announcement is unusual because IPv6 generally isn't a consumer marketable term, preferring instead to work behind the scenes where nobody can see it.

Ofcom has today revealed that many UK ISPs are only meeting some aspects of its Code of Practice (CoP) on broadband speeds and failing in other areas. The regulator is now proposing to toughen up the code or possibly even enforce mandatory changes if providers fail to agree.

The UK Liberal Democrat party appears to have taken a stronger position against some of the currently proposed Digital Economy Bill (DEB) measures. The bill aims to tackle illicit copyright file sharing (P2P) by broadband ISP users. Sadly it could also result in innocent people being forcibly disconnected from the internet, the unfair blocking of websites such as YouTube and damage access to public/open Wi-Fi networks.

The Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) has lashed out at last years ridiculous decision by the UK Government's HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) department to force farmers in areas with no or poor broadband ISP provision to fill out their monthly or quartly VAT returns on-line. The change will become effective from 1st April and applies to all businesses with a turnover of over £100,000.

The BBC's Technology Correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones, has published the results of his Freedom of Information (FoI) request to the Department for Business. The request demanded information about any correspondence relating to online piracy or illegal file-sharing by UK broadband ISP users.

The Communications Consumer Panel has called on the Government to make sure that its Universal Service Commitment (USC), which aims to deliver a minimum broadband ISP speed of at least 2Mbps to virtually every household in the UK by 2012, keeps to a set of eight guiding principles designed to help meet consumers’ needs.

The Director of Project Canvas and Internet TV ( IPTV ) Programme's at the BBC, Richard Halton, has told the IPTV World Forum that broadband television services would see a 70% market growth by 2015. In addition it could also help to add up to an additional 870,000 broadband ISP connections in the UK.

Broadband providers, such as Entanet UK, TalkTalk and the i3 Group (H2O Networks, Fibrecity), have poured scorn over yesterdays Budget and its plans to help fund the rollout of next generation fibre optic based broadband services by putting a new 50p +vat per month tax on all fixed phone lines in the country.
