plusnet logoInternet access provider PlusNet has quietly launched a new 4 MONTHS FREE BROADBAND promotion, which is available to everyone that signs up online between now and 18th May 2010. Details of their primary broadband packages can be found below and they also offer phone line bundles.

PlusNet charges based off Ofcom's "Market" 1, 2 and 3 classifications. This is directly connected to BT regulation. For example, customers living in Market 3 areas have plenty of ISP choice and thus services are usually cheaper.

Plus Net does NOT DO LLU, they just use BT equipment as they are fully owned bt BT anyway.
Why on earth should they be allowed to charge DOUBLE the price to unfortunate Market 1 & 2 customers ?

OFCOM come up with this MAD scheme in order to promote competition, but IT's NOT WORKING !
There is no sign of any competition coming to small(er) exchanges !
How long do we have to suffer this injustice ?

Martin, I totally agree with you. I just hope that Market 1 & 2 potential customers see through this and vote with their feet.

Why not do it? At least they're doing things differently from every other ISP so it's a fair way to separate themselves. The Market1/2 prices aren't terrible either.

market 1 & 2 are really stupid plan by ofcom. The market 1,2 and 3 should be all equal paying for their broadband! other isps are fixed same prices no matter which market exchanges you are with. Plusnet should be ashameful of themselves by sticking their asshole with ofcom.

As most ISPs charge less at exchanges where they have a LLU presence, I think it only fair that BT Wholesale based ISPs should be allowed to charge competitive prices at those exchanges. Otherwise you could end up with non-llu isps only having customers at the exchanges that no-one deems it profitable enough to unbundle, and you'd likely see the ISP's costs and therefor prices at those exchanges actually go up.

Maybe it would have been better for Ofcom to have found an alternative way of driving BT's prices down to LLU and its duplication of resources.

Presumably BT's rollout of fibre will reduce the likelyhood of exchanges being LLUed.

Plus.Net seems to be the only ISP which passes on the lower charge for Market 3 exchanges, and then gets comments about them charging "too much" for Market 1/2.

From details a while back, I think BT Wholesale charges around 8 pounds per line for providing the ADSL service, which is why people on Sky (where the exchange has no Sky LLU service) get charged an extra 10 pounds.

So if BT charges that much, how can anyone expect Plus.Net to absorb that cost for customers who are on Market 1/2 exchanges ?

Plus.Net pass on the discount for Market 3, so complaints should really be made against other ISPs which don't reduce the cost for Market 3 users.

To be fair most other ISPs do that already, it's a balancing act. The majority of providers don't offer lower Market 3 prices because they prefer to balance the costs of all markets into a single simple price / set of prices.

As I said earlier, I don't think PlusNet do any harm here, they're just offering choice and what is wrong with that? It makes good business sense and their M1/2 prices are still at competitive levels with other BT Wholesale based ISPs.

My post clearly says it's mostly OFCOM's doing, but PlusNet is in postion to be fair to ALL their customers.

Mark J says the Market 1&2 prices aren't terible, but that's not the point. We are paying DOUBLE the Market 3 rates, and have very limited choice (e.g. Talk Talk adds £15 'non network' charge. i.e they don't want our custom).

How would you feel if you were charged DOUBLE the going rate for your gas / electricity / phone line, just because your local distributor have no competititon ?

Hopefully if you didn't like what was on offer then you'd just pick an alternative provider with price/services that suited your requirements. It's not like the prices are imposed upon you, PlusNet is just another "choice" in a market with many options.

IMO it's a fair point to disagree with Ofcom / BT's solution, but I wouldn't really poke PlusNet as they've just made their own model based off that and are trying to make use of the same competitive solution that LLU providers use. Like I say, it's just another choice, you don't have to pick them. I'd rather have the option than see everybody adopt an identical model.

Let's not forget some people still don't have a gas service, so have to use oil for heating, and some (until last summer) valley in Wales didn't have mains electricity either.

While we have been overtaken by some less industrial countries where the landline system was limited or nil, we do at least have near to 5500 exchanges with *some* ADSL service. A handful have none, and some people live too far away to even get ADSL so have no option but for Satellite at 35 quid a month and 500 or 700 installation (and 35 quid only gets them 2 GB of data).

I'm on a Market 3 exchange, but with Orange, AOL / Tiscali / TalkTalk, I am using PlusNet as I cannot get Be / O2 (or Sky), and only get 1 Mbps anyway. Just have to accept what you get is my motto.
