A new survey of 6,000 broadband users in the UK has revealed that more than half are believed to be "
wasting money on outdated [and] overpriced packages" because they have not changed ISP for at least three years. This is despite a claimed drop of 34% in average standalone package prices and a 130% increase in download speeds over the same period.
The
BroadbandChoices study naturally believes this to be "
proof" that consumers are overpaying for their service, which is probably true for some. However the linear study does not take account of the fact that many providers, albeit not all, do pass price adjustments on to their customers; often when lengthy contract periods require renewal.
The survey also fails to consider that a broadband internet connection is about more than price. Service quality and additional value added features can also be major reasons why a consumer might choose to remain with one ISP over cheaper alternatives. Just because somebody is paying extra doesn't mean to say they're getting a bad service.
