A crucial
Seacom fibre optic cable, which links UK and European broadband internet users with Africa and India, was struck by a serious fault on Monday that will take a minimum of 6-8 days to fix.
The "
submarine" fault, identified as a repeater failure in segment 9 offshore to the north of Mombasa, has resulted in service downtime between Mumbai and Mombasa and also affects traffic towards both India and Europe.
Seacom Statement
The exact cause of the problem is still being investigated but the current assessment points to a technical issue on the SEACOM cable offshore to the north of Mombasa, Kenya. Whilst the repair process is expected to last a minimum of 6-8 days, the actual duration is unpredictable due to external factors such as transit time of the ship, weather conditions and time to locate the cable.
Traffic within Africa is not affected.
