The
Kent (UK) village of
Farningham has come "
top" in a new list of the country's
slowest locations for broadband ISP connections in Britain, where average download speeds hover at around just
1.30Mbps (Megabits Per Second).
It's worth pointing out that the results, which were based on
98,000 UK speedtests conducted by
Top10.com between August and October 2010, didn't include areas that don't have any broadband access (0Mbps is surely the slowest :cheese:) or those with too few samples (needed 50+ tests) to produce a reliable outcome. As a result this is not a complete representation.
It's interesting to note that the
Worst Top 19 also includes the city of
Worcester, which is home to a
population of 100,000. This just goes to show that improving the UK's broadband infrastructure isn't merely a rural issue, with many of those who suffer from slower speeds living in urban areas.
The study reported that average UK download speeds between August and October 2010 stood at
6.86Mbps, which is well above Ofcom's May 2010 figure of
5.2Mbps and other anecdotal tests that report averages of around 5Mbps.
