UPDATE2 BT Delays Dates for 42 UK Superfast Broadband Telephone Exchanges

Posted: 18th Jan, 2011 By: MarkJ
BT UK superfast fibre optic broadband cable rolloutbt ukBT Openreach, which last week announced 41 new UK rural "market towns" (telephone exchanges) that would soon (March 2012) be able to receive its superfast 'up to' 40Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet ( FTTC ) based broadband services (here), will this week also announce a 2nd batch of additional locations but has also delayed the dates for others.

However some of the telephone exchange upgrades, which are now part of the operators Phase 7a rollout and have the same upgrade dates in March 2012, have actually already been released. For example, DRAYTON in Norfolk was originally set to be upgraded in September 2011 but has now slipped back to the March 2012 date. Others have been put back even further. The new ones won't be publicised until a series of regional press releases by BT this week.

This list also includes 16 locations that will benefit from BT's full Fibre-to-the-Premise's ( FTTP ) 110Mbps capable fibre optic broadband technology, as well as the usual FTTC service alongside.

Further exchange upgrade dates will also be announced in the coming months. BT is approximately only half way through its rollout plan.

UPDATE 18th January 2011

Made a few small adjustments to the wording above because BT are now hinting that they may release some additional new exchanges, on top of last weeks and today's list above, during the course of this week. We've been trying to clarify this for a week and hope to update again soon.

UPDATE2 18th January 2011 - 9:35am

BT has finally clarified that the above 42 exchanges "have simply moved back in the roll-out schedule as we balance resources within the programme", which means they've been delayed as per our example in the amended content.

Problems, such as the recent heavy snow and "operational issues" (lack of trained staff perhaps), are believed to be the main culprits. Sorry if anybody thought these were "new" exchanges earlier, that's just what we were being told yesterday afternoon.
