copper cablebt fttc uk superfast broadbandTelecoms operator BT has announced that a raft of rural towns and villages in Wales will be among the latest to benefit from their continuing rollout of faster "advanced copper broadband" ( ADSL2+ ) services, which ultimately aims to cover 90% of the UK (22.5 million premises) by the end of Spring 2013.

The latest update, which is NOT to be confused with BT's additional £2.5bn deployment of fibre optic based superfast broadband ( BT-Infinity , FTTC , FTTP ) services, means that 130,000 homes and businesses should benefit from faster speeds. In all some 43 telephone exchanges [ED: awaiting correct figure from BT] are listed as part of BT's latest rollout update (only 33 listed below thanks to the BBC News), which are all due to be completed by the summer of 2012.

At present ADSL2+ technology from BT covers almost 80% (20 million premises) of the UK and claims to deliver top speeds of 20-24Mbps (Megabits per second). Sadly ADSL2+ is a highly variable technology and anybody whom already receives sub-1Mbps speeds via an existing up to 8Mbps ( ADSL ) line won't see much of an improvement (if any).

So far TalkTalk is the only other UK ISP to target a similar level of ADSL2+ coverage and is already sitting just shy of the 90% figure with its cheaper unbundled ( LLU ) ADSL2+ broadband network. Many other LLU ISPs ( O2 , Sky Broadband etc. ) currently cover around 78-85% of the UK.

We hope to have a full list of BT's latest exchange upgrades just as soon as their PR team wake up to share it.

Aberystwyth FINALLY :) My old student haunt.
When I was living there the best available was 2Mbps ADSL!

the divide grows ever wider, with only those near the exchanges getting the faster speeds, and this interim solution means rural areas will get even more frustrated with the lack of decent access. We can't have a digital britain until everyone has affordable fit for purpose connectivity.

Out of the 3 million that live in Wales, and i doubt that 130,000 figure is even accurate.

Wouldn't it be easier and a lot cheaper just to go straight to FTTC? These places don't seem very big to wouldn't take that much longer....

@Legolash2o

BT have to upgrade any exchange to adsl2+ first before they can go FTTC.

Another thought that if cab is upgraded with fibre and only a small number of people take up FTTC how do BT keep the rest on adsl2+ when the change over occurs?

As with any upgrade its time and money, these excahnges could be planned for later on in the rollout as it continues till 2014, Wales BDUK fund has not been open to a tender yet.

Sledge BT will likley upgrade people onto the FTTC service and withdraw the old copper service eventually.
BT can also enable a exchanges cabinets to FTTC and run the backhall to another exchange, so 21CN is not needed for all exchanges.

I think LLU is a logistical problem when it comes to removing the copper. I have heard of fttc being deployed in other countries with the esides and numerous exchanges being recovered / sold off to help pay for this. But how happy would sky be if BT decided to rip up the esides after they have invested heavily in new copper exchange equipment?
I doubt OFCOM would allow it. Also BTs fibre cabinets do not hold enough connections for every customer in most cases so would need an even bigger investment in additional / bigger cabs.
Unless we saw a huge take up in VULA, I doubt any automatic upgrade and subsequent recovery of old network anywhere other than BT only exchanges (and unlikely even then).

@ Berks

I failed to make the point that people who are on LLU exchange and their cab is upgraded to FTTC then there is going to be a problem with any one not wanting to take up FTTC( say customer with talktalk wants to stay on adsl2 and not move to FTTC), how are they going to sort that one out?

Apart from the cost of moving a LLU line back to a BT line so that you could have FTTC. IT looks a bit complicated?

I mean't why don't they install the cabs at the same time as updating them to 21CN, nevermind anyway i got the answer from BT themselves. :)

@ Telecom Engineer

So have I got this right when I say BT will cover 90% with FTTC/FTTH not everybody will be able to get it, only a percentage due to cabinet capacity. This will only be improved with the installation of more cabinets way into the future.

It makes me think BT are flogging a dead horse, and we are looking at a copper basis for the indefinite number of years, 20+.

^^^ Id give up trying to explain exchange enablement doesnt = people able to get FTTC to BT workers right now. They dont comprehend there are places with 20,000+ on an exchange and well less than 50% of them able to get FTTC due to no new cabinets.
