bt fttc street cabinet uk installbt uk cornwall fibre optic broadbandThe £132 Million (£53.5m from ERDF and £78.5m from BT) 'Big Build' public and private sector partnership project in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, which aims to make BT's superfast broadband ISP services available to at least 80% (ideally 90%) of the regions businesses and homes by the end of 2014, has just connected up five more communities.

The communities include Trispen, Lanivet, Penryn, Porthtowan and Drakewalls. A recent survey of 200 locals in the small village Trispen revealed that 80% had previously experienced slow broadband speeds or connection problems.

Nigel Ashcroft, Programme Director of Superfast Cornwall for Cornwall Development Company, said:

"We're tremendously excited to bring superfast broadband to Trispen in particular, an area we've had on our radar for some time. As the first major phase of the programme roll-out gathers momentum, we've been delighted by the enthusiasm from local people - demand for better connectivity is high and we're looking to break some records on the take-up of this incredible new service. We really want businesses and people to grasp this early advantage and translate it into real economic benefit; new jobs and opportunities for all."

Further parts of the Truro and Liskeard areas have also been enabled. Overall some 14 communities will now gain access to superfast broadband services a year earlier than planned (i.e. 2012 instead of 2013), which includes Camelford, Perranporth, Trebetherick, Wadebridge, Padstow, Mitchell, Otterham, Port Isaac, St Columb Major, St Merryn, The Lizard, Tintagel, Rumford and Boscastle. They represent about 25,000 homes and businesses.

Meanwhile just down the road in superslow Devon, we can only look on and dream. At least Bridgerule was lucky to straggle the border with Cornwall.

Bring on the revolution for two thousand and twelve -
I look forward to the time, hopefully very soon when all the big utilities, some of which are currently 'futilities' are renationalized. Only then will we achieve an honestly basic, efficient, inexpensive service.

@Gruntintunz
Sugest you check back on the actual service provided by the utilities pre-privatisation. I doubt many people who experienced the slow service and high prices on offer at the time will be nostalgic, looking forward top getting that back again!

Totally agree with you Gruntintunz, since BT have became privatised line rental and similar have risen on far more occasions than they use to.

With regards to broadband nobody is to say how good or bad it would had performed as we didnt have that during the non-privatised era. A shame really otherwise in that area i suspect we would also see how poor BT are as a private entity.

Lets hope if FTTC turns out to be a money maker the government have a clause that states BT have to pay back all the tax payer cash they have been absorbing like a sponge.

Yep nationalisation really works. wink

BT looks to do ok in the business market in the UK in fact the world so they can't be that poor surely?

I wouldn't want broadband or anything for that matter under government control they are making a hash of things with what they have now mad

I don't think the government money is a loan is it and there's not much of it either is there.. 500mill or something to share out to companies that win the money (whoever bids)
