netflix uk internet statisticsCustomers of the Virgin Media broadband service account for 32% of internet traffic to Netflix UK, which streams unlimited movies and TV episodes to computers and other online devices. By comparison BT customers only accounted for 21% and Sky Broadband grabbed 19%.

ISPreview.co.uk has been attempting to get more information since yesterday, when we reported that Netflix UK traffic was showing strong growth among PlusNet subscribers (here). Sadly many ISPs don't have enough data to share (Netflix UK only launched last week) and even PlusNet said that, despite strong growth, Netflix still only ate 60Mbps of their overall bandwidth during peak times.

Thankfully Netflix also gave a presentation at yesterday's meeting of the United Kingdom Network Operators' Forum (UKNOF), which revealed a few very rough and extremely preliminary statistics about their UK launch. One ISP was even kind enough to furnish us with a copy.

netflix uk isp traffic share

Netflix's entry into the UK market is in the very early stages and many people still don't even know about its existence. The general statistics above, when combined with PlusNet's data from yesterday, suggests that the service has made a good start but is still a long way off having a significant impact.

I bet Plusnet one day will put a traffic management on Netflix sooner or later. They had to increase usage allowance from 60GB to 80GB pretty sooner on the plusnet extra and from 10GB to 40GB on the plusnet value.

They probably already have some type of limitation looking at their site it seems iplayer etc is either throttled or lacks priority in the traffic stakes. SO i imagine similar goes for Netflix, lovefilm etc etc.

Also as i suspect from this its at the time its a low amount of Plusnet users, no idea why they went public the other day with the story.

Great job to MarkJ and ISPreview on the updates and chart here :)

The use of percentages on any pie chart mean diddley, NO useful information is given. The total of users could be 70 or 7000,000 it makes a big difference when actual numbers are quoted.

So the whole news item is a fishing exercise for WHAT ? netflix.

Combine it with PlusNet's data from yesterday (i.e. 2% = 60Mbps at peak) and then adjust for the other ISPs.
