Ofcom, the United Kingdom's telecoms regulator, has revealed in a new study that broadband ISPs in the UK deliver a national average internet download speed of 7.6Mbps (up from 6.8Mbps in July 2011). Sadly most continue to advertise headline speeds that are double what they actually deliver to customers.

Ofcom has today launched its final consultation on the auction of future superfast 4g Mobile Broadband spectrum in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. The new consultation proposes to extend the UK coverage of related services from 95% to 98% of the country and puts forward several measures to prevent any one operator from holding too much spectrum.

Ofcom has published three new research reports to help it identify the best way of creating a consistent and representative measurement system for gauging the level of illegal internet copyright infringement (piracy) in the UK. One study estimated that the country was home to 6.7 million "illegal downloaders".

UK ISP TalkTalk has once again been labelled as the country's most complained about telecoms operator for its fixed line broadband and phone services by Ofcom, while Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have won praise for being two of the best. Three (3) was the worst for mobile services.
