trouble logging in, getting error 738

Hi all,

I'm getting an error message when I log in to pipex. It logs me in using my username / password, then when it tries to register me with the network, this error message appears;

'TCP / IP CP reported error 738 The server did not assign an address'

I've not changed anything on my computer. I use a PCI DSL card, and never had this error before. As anyone else had this error recently? Is it just a temporary glitch at their end?

I'm on the SHAW exchange (near Manchester).

Any help would be appreciated guys.

First quick idea is to turn off the router/modem for 10 mins and then try again. If it works great...if not then I hope somebody else can give you the answer.
I gave up Nildram (Pipex) when I heard they were becoming Tiscali. Judging by the horror stories I hear then I'm glad I jumped ship to Aquiss.

2nd thoughts...I've just noticed you've got a card which means it's in the computer. Try unplugging the computer from the mains. Some cards are still active even when the computer appers to to be shut down. That may re-set it....if not then I can't help...but it's worth a try as it's so simple.

Alternatively, buy a router and kiss DUN problems goodbye :) .

Thanks for the advice all.

Its still happening this morning. I've checked all my settings, as in its getting the ip automatically etc. Personally I think its something on Pipex's end. I didn't change anything from when it was working to now it not working. Also the error seems to be an error in the network. It verify's my username and password, then goes to the registering me with the network.. usually I'm logged on at that point. But since this, the error pops up all the time. From what I can understand the error pops up because there is a conflict on their network with the IP address. I'm connecting with the phone exchange as usual.

I emailed Pipex yesterday afternoon. They got back to me but then just wanted more details of my pipex account, even though I'd entered these when I signed up in order to report this (why was it asking me to register to ask them a question when I was already in my pipex account via the website!?). Anyway, I've emailed them back this morning with the details they asked for.

I wonder sometimes if this isn't an effort by them to get me off my 2mb unlimited account I had from day 1. But maybe its too early for that conspiracy theory yet! :laugh:

Just thought I'd update you guys. Suddenly its started working again.. (so far! I've only tried it once :) ).
