Near-total outage 25th February

I am wondering whether there are any other people who have had total or near-total Internet failure on 25th February, esp. in the Bristol area. During February I've had several incidents of non-access to the Internet, but today beats them all. Switched on this morning, almost every one of my regularly visited websites inaccessible or timed out; rebooted the router, but no change. But then, by using an anonymous proxy, I could access normally. This has been going on all day.
My isp is Pipex, now TalkTalk. Before everyone goes "yeah, no wonder", I have to say I've never had any real problems until this year. But suddenly I'm getting outages almost every week. I can't tell what it is; DOS attacks? bad isp connection? or what? My ADSL line is fine. I've logged a statement to TalkTalk and am awaiting a reply, but in the meantime thought I'd post here.....just in case someone recognises the issue.

This may or may not be related, but it depends upon whether Pipex is still the name on your details or not:

Otherwise it sounds like you might be experiencing a DNS problem as your physical connection still appears to work. Have you tried switching to a free and often better alternative DNS like OpenDNS? It's usually just a simple matter of changing/adding a few numbers to your router for primary and secondary DNS.

Thanks for the reply. I have been told that TalkTalk still hold my Pipex account and are billing me; I had already read the article and had chased the matter up.
I'm afraid I don't know anything about OpenDNS; never heard of it. Where do I find information about that? In the meantime I'll trawl the search engines and maybe find it.

The OpenDNS.org website offers some advice. It's actually pretty simple once you find where to put the right details in your router.

It can also be worth trying your connection via a different computer too as sometimes local network settings can cause similar behaviour. So if you know somebody who has a laptop or your smartphone is WiFi equipped (assuming your kit does wifi)..
