BT Infinity 2 - P2P Speeds

Well, I have plumped for BT Infinity 2.

I will report back my experiences after the 8th June as far as torrent performance..

If torrents are a priority then you are not going to be happy, only need to look at BT community forums to see how bad torrrents are throttled.

What service do you have at the moment Bogbeast and how much speed do you get before the upgrade?

Well it is done...

BT came yesterday and did the deed. Nice man from Cornwall (I live in Oxfordshire....)

The HH3 is a piece of rubbish compared to my vigor - need to look at updating that !

I am not sure about the upload speed. Mr BT man tested it at 18+ so I am not sure if speedtest is reporting correctly.

Anyway, sufficient to say I am (massively) impressed.... :D

Fired up Utorrent last night about 10pm , picked a nice large torrent to download and initially I wasn't impressed only getting 15-20kB/s after 5 minutes of waiting.

Engaged in a bit of settings fiddling as per http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/4089502-bt-infinity-or-plusnet-fttc.html?page=1&fpart=4 and restarted..

Tried again just now (midday Saturday) and even after a minute of to I am still clearing 1.5MB/s.

Maybe I didn't wait long enough on my first go - maybe after a while it would have picked up, but my inclination is that the settings did make a big difference.

For P2P Glasnost says:

So BT are shaping, however if they shape at 1.5MB/s then that's fine with me... :) Can't see any other traffic being shaped.

I had always planned & costed a VPN service in just in case, but if everything continues as it is then I have a huge uplift in throughput for less money with BT Openzone thrown in... Bargain..

Now the problem is my wireless - its just not fast enough to keep up !

If anything changes I will post back here.

Anyone suggest a better/more accurate test than SpeedTest ?

Sadly BT do indeed have quite a strict policy towards P2P, although it's not quite as tough on their top Infinity packages as some of the others but it can still be frustrating.

As for wireless, some n spec WiFi routers claim speeds of 300Mbps+ (usually a doubled value) but in reality this often only works in close proximity to the router. I think we'll have to wait for the final 802.11ac spec before the best speeds of 1Gbps+ can be had over wireless.
