Router Stats

Hi,

Can anyone help me to get any improvement in my speed or is this the best I can expect.

The key attenuation and SNR margin stats you have don't seem to be in the normal format. For example, downstream attenuation is usually between 1 and 85db but you have 255. I've also never heard of 'Infinity Developments' ISP?

Hi,

Looking at the SNR Margin (0.1dB) I think it should be read as 6.6 and 5.6. Likewise with Attenuation 25.5 and 11.1 . With this in mind will I be able to get any improvement in my speed and if yes, how?

Paul.

If your router supports it and it were a service which isnt BT based (IE a form of LLU which isnt subject to BTs DLM) you could tweak down the SNR Margin a bit (say to around 4db), to maybe get 1Mb or so more.

Also is this plugged into a extension rather than master socket, and what condition is your home wiring in? With a 25.5db attenuation you should be hitting around 14-15Mb ideally (which is what your stats say you are getting).

Have you tried other locations on speedtest.net? and what real life download speed are you getting?

Hi,

I am with IDnet, the router is plugged directly onto the test socket of the master socket. Only been with IDnet since the 16th April.

My initial speed was 13.2 D/L 1.01 U/L which was constant with a variety of sites across the U.K. The only thing that did change was the ping rate, anything from 10 to 55 ms.

I am thinking that I should contact IDnet and see if they can improve things from their end.

You're using a TP-Link router? Telnet to 192.168.1.1, enter "admin" for login and password, then type "adsl info --stats" - you should then get a list of stats that start something like this -

Code:
adsl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Retrain Reason: 8000
Max: Upstream rate = 1190 Kbps, Downstream rate = 17522 Kbps
Path: 0, Upstream rate = 1020 Kbps, Downstream rate = 15608 Kbps

Link Power State: L0
Mode: ADSL2+
Trellis: U:OFF /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
                Down Up
SNR (dB): 10.0 11.2
Attn(dB): 22.0 10.4
Pwr(dBm): 19.1 12.6

Hi Bob2002,

I have no problem getting into the router info, it's just "there is nowhere to type anything once you are in" .If I try using the web browser it just shoots me off to a list of web sites. The stats shown are the ones taken from DEVICE INFO-STATISTICS-xDSL.

Thanks for the reply Paul.

Paul, you need to run "telnet" from the command line in Windows(assuming you're using Windows) - you don't run it through your web browser. Here is a guide to enabling telnet in Windows 7 - link. Post back if you want any help. :)

Code:
telnet 192.168.1.1

Trying 192.168.1.1...
Connected to 192.168.1.1.
Escape character is '^]'.

On ADSL2+ with an attenuation of 28db i got 19.5mbit with a target snr of 4db and fastpath, llu, You should be getting a little more than you are with a 6db, probably due to interleaving being on

Hi,

Thanks to all that have replied to my problem and given me new info and insight into the set up of a router. Also understanding the results a BIG thank you all.

Best regards Paul.

Pretty much what the others said. At best those stats will give you around 15-16Mbps connection or 13-14Mbps real-world speeds, so in reality what you get isn't far off and if you try to push more then I'd be worried about line stability. On the bright side you're still roughly twice the national average :) .
