As expected Ofcom has officially granted Code Powers to Sea Fibre Networks Limited, which will allow the firm to carry out street works in Wales and Staffordshire (England) to help improve the United Kingdom’s existing fibre optic link with Ireland.
Sea Fibre’s existing multi-fibre cable (CeltixConnect) already runs from Dublin City Centre (Ireland) to Holyhead in Wales. The new Code Powers will help SFN to expand and lease Dark Fibre lines in both major UK urban and rural areas to other ISPs or large corporate customers. Without the new powers such work would have attracted “additional costs and delays“.

Tom McMahon, CTO of Sea Fibre Networks, told ISPreview.co.uk:
“Code powers makes SFN better placed to quickly deploy alternative networks and interconnection points to ensure customer requirements such as lead times, diversity and network length are met.”
Ofcom’s related consultation attracted no responses, which is not surprising as there are very few credible reasons for opposing SFN’s request.
