The Government has today published its fifth wave study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile data consumers, which estimates that 18% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (7.8 million people) had consumed at least one item of “illegal” online content and 6% “exclusively consumed illegal content“.

A new survey of 2,000 British adults from Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) has claimed that 1 in 4 people are using a Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G) connection at home in order to get online because their fixed line broadband fuelled home WiFi service is not good enough.

ISP TalkTalk appears to have somewhat broken with tradition this morning by issuing a surprisingly vague trading update for the second quarter of 2015, which reveals very little except to confirm that the migration of Tesco’s broadband customers onto their network has “begun well” and should complete over the coming months.

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld two complaints against website adverts for Virgin Media’s cable broadband and phone deals, which they ruled were misleading due to the operator raising the cost above what they promoted and thus being in breach of Ofcom’s rules on mid-contract price hikes.

A row over competition in the UK market for Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) services has erupted after broadband ISP TalkTalk accused Vodafone of “withdrawing entirely from the MVNO market“, which would seriously limit the choices for BT and EE’s rivals when hunting for an alternative supplier.

The CEO of BTOpenreach, Joe Garner, has warned that Ofcom’s new 2015 Strategic Review of Digital Communications is allegedly at risk of being “hijacked by corporate rivalries” and that a better solution to the future telecoms landscape might come from less regulation and potentially higher prices to help boost investment. The Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative has teamed-up with the Dunlaw Extension Community Benefit Trust to commit a grant of £152,000 that will be used to help build a new “superfast” capable fixed wireless broadband service to over 250 premises around the Humbie and Fala areas.

UK ISP Zen Internet, which is now home to 430 staff, has revealed that their operating profits surged 34% from £760,000 to £1.02m in the year to the end of September 2014 and revenues rose 6.8% from £47.36m (2013) to £50.62m. But there were also a few blips for the accounts department to tackle.

BTOpenreach has told ISPreview.co.uk that the first large-scale residential trial of their future G.fast broadband technology (details), which the telecoms operator expects to sell via the Next Generation Access 2 (NGA2) tag, will begin next month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and ISPs are now being invited.
