BT Gives their UK Telecoms Engineers a Speed Boost

Telecoms operator BT has begun to roll-out a new solution that aims to reduce the distance that its engineers need to travel in order to collect equipment, which they claim should help to “speed up the delivery of broadband and phone services.”

TeraHertz WiFi Moves Closer as Scientists Achieve Speeds of 34Gbps+

Researchers from Japan have managed to boost the speed of WiFi data transmissions to 34Gbps (Gigabits per second) by harnessing the 500GHz band of radio spectrum, which falls within the TeraHertz range (300GHz+). Even faster speeds are coming, but distance may be a problem.

Virgin Media Freezes Line Rental for Elderly and Disabled Customers

Cable operator Virgin Media has today taken Ofcom’s new probe into the cost of landline rental (here) to heart and announced the launch of a new “Talk Protected” plan, which will freeze the price of line rental at £17.99 per month for its elderly and disabled phone-only customers.

UPDATE KCOM’s Broadband ISP Routers Infected by the Mirai Worm

Earlier this week we reported on how routers supplied by the Post Office, TalkTalk and others were potentially vulnerable to a modified piece of malicious software called Mirai (here), which hijacks the device. Today we learn that around 1,000 customers of KCOM’s service in Hull have also been hit.

Ofcom Finally Decides to Probe the Rising Price of UK Phone Line Rental

The UK telecoms regulator has finally decided to take a closer look at one of the markets most heated issues, the ever rising price of retail line rental. In recent years this has risen by between 28% and 41% in real terms, while the underlying wholesale cost has fallen by around 25%.
