Macquarie Infrastructure (MIRA / MEIF 6 Fibre) has today confirmed that they’ve finalised their £627m acquisition of Hull and East Riding’s (East Yorkshire) incumbent broadband ISP KCOM. The new owner intends to expand the provider’s “full fibre” (FTTP) network, hopefully starting with the c.9,000 that have been missed.

Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK) will today join EE and Vodafone by confirming that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network has finally gone live, starting in busy parts of London with a £35 home broadband ISP alternative. The initial plan is to cover 25 towns and cities by the end of 2019 and deliver “at least 2x faster” speeds.

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project, which has been working with BT (Openreach) to rollout “superfast broadband” to poorly served areas, is to extend Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) UK ISP technology to cover a further 6,000 premises thanks to a reinvestment of £17.8m.

Anybody lucky enough to be within reach of Hyperoptic’s Gigabit capable FTTP / FTTB broadband network, which at present covers about 500,000 UK premises across 39 UK “Hyper Cities“, will be pleased to know that they’re boosting both the download and upload speeds of their entry-level package.

A new survey of 1,000 broadband customers, conducted by Which?, has revealed that 40% had been with the same ISP for 10 years and only 15% had been with their provider for less than 2 years (likely to reflect recent switchers). The reasons for this tended to vary between users of BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media.

A new report from lesser known UK think tank Parliament Street has warned how a historic “lack of investment” and “chronic connectivity” problems mean that too many rural areas are still being “challenged” by issues such as “slow broadband, less bandwidth, and problematic mobile and TV reception,” among other things.

BT‘s consumer division has today announced the start of their annual student broadband deals ahead of the new term, which as per usual feature shorter 9 month contract terms as an option alongside the usual 12 month ones. Sadly they only seem to be offering this on their slower 50Mbps and 67Mbps (FTTC) plans.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has discounted the price of their 50Mbps to 350Mbps standalone broadband packages by -£7 per month for the first 12 months of service, which for example means that you’d now pay from £30 per month (£37 from month 13) for their entry-level 50Mbps package and £45 for 350Mbps (£52 from month 13).

A couple of months ago we reported that the Government’s new tourism sector deal would make £250,000 available to help boost “full fibre” broadband facilities in conference centres across the UK (here). Today a new competition has been launched that enables such centres to bid for a slice of the funding pot.

A new survey of 2,000 mobile phone using UK adults, which was conducted by Global Wireless Solutions and OnePoll, has claimed that 11% of respondents felt their experience in a restaurant had “been ruined due to poor mobile connectivity.” Meanwhile EE and O2 offered the most reliable service while inside such eateries.

Mobile operator giffgaff has once again (they seem to do it each year) refreshed their range of 4G mobile “goodybag” plans by effectively doubling the data (mobile broadband) allowances on three of their mid-range tariffs, which for example means that for £15 per month you’ll now get 15GB instead of 8GB.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has begun to invite selected customers in Southampton (Hampshire) to help trial their new DOCSIS 3.1 network upgrade, which will boost the service’s top download speed to 1000Mbps (albeit only 50Mbps upload) on existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) and full fibre FTTP lines.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today launched their new triple-play “Together” bundle, which combines a fixed line phone service with unlimited home broadband (FTTC / VDSL2) and 5G based mobile broadband data into a single package from £31 per month. Ofcom has today confirmed that broadband and telecoms giant BT reported an incorrect level of turnover information to the regulator for the years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, which meant they had breached the regulator’s rules and a related 2011 General Demand for Information (GDI).

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and video streaming service, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), has entered into a new partnership with Tesco that will allow existing Clubcard holders to convert their vouchers into credit for triple the value when used with the service (e.g. £5 worth of vouches becomes £15!).

Customers of UK ISP Plusnet, which is a BT sibling company, who take the £5 per month BTSport TV App add-on on a 30 day contract have been left in shock after the provider suddenly began informing them that the price they currently pay would be hiked by 100% from 17th September 2019.
