Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that 20,000 premises in Wrexham (North Wales) can now gain access to their gigabit-capable network, with further expansion planned for 2022. The operator has so far invested some £12m into the local rollout.

Ofcom looks set to stoke anger among alternative UK network (AltNets) builders after the regulator today flatly rejected their concerns over Openreach’s “Equinox” offer, which will introduce a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for ISPs.

First they launched it, then they “put a short pause” on the deployment and said it was just a trial, before adding that it would arrive in “early 2021“, which in January 2021 became “later this year” (here). Mobile operator Three UK has now indicated that eSIM support for 4G and 5G handsets will not arrive until 2022.

Mobile operator iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone) has apologised to 24,000 of their UK customers after a billing fail resulted in them sending out an “outstanding balance notification in error,” which warned recipients that their service would be “suspended until the full outstanding balance has been paid.”

A number of reports today have claimed that TalkTalk will, effective from October 2021, partner up with Netgem TV to offer their UK home broadband customers access to a new set-top-box for premium TV (IPTV) services, but only those on their “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) plans will be able to take it.

Wireless broadband ISP Boundless Networks has today become the latest provider to hop on to CityFibre’s growing national UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which will see them sell related packages – via their Boundless Internet retail brand – to premises in and around the Harrogate, Knaresborough, Leeds and Ripon areas.

Opensignal’s latest Q3 2021 Mobile Network Experience Report, which uses crowd-sourced data to measure the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) performance of all four primary operators (EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK) to determine which delivers the best service, has given most of the awards to EE. Except when only looking at 5G.

Telecoms giant Vodafone has teamed-up with Benu Networks, Casa Systems, Cisco and Nokia to conduct a “world first” multi-vendor test of TR-459, which reflects a new open architecture standard for the Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) that could make it “quicker and easier” to deliver faster fixed broadband services to customers.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has banned a TV and email advert for ISP TalkTalk’s home broadband packages, which occurred after they were found to have misleadingly pledged “no mid-contract rises” on supposedly “fixed” price plans, only to later increase their prices during the fixed contract period.

UK ISP YouFibre has announced that the first customers can now connect to their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the two towns of Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria) and Houghton-le-Spring (Tyne and Wear), which has been built by network partner Netomnia.

We now understand that the Sky over IP (SoIP) service will launch as part of an integrated QLED TV product line (pictured), called Sky Glass.
