Virgin Media O2 UK Hub 5 Router

The recent launch of Virgin Media UK’s new 2Gbps full fibre (FTTP / XGS-PON) home broadband package was a welcome development (here). But one notable caveat was that it shipped with a new variant of the Hub 5 router, the Hub 5x, which lacked a functional Modem Mode, although this is planned to be introduced.

Telecoms giant Vodafone UK, specifically their business focused Carrier Services (wholesale) division, has launched a new service called Scam Signal that allows businesses to protect their customers from impersonation scams, such as Authorised Pushed Payment (APP) fraud.

Belfast-based UK network builder and full fibre broadband ISP Fibrus has launched a new 2024 Community Fund, which is worth a total of £120,000 and will be distributed to a variety of rural community groups across the operator’s network patches in Northern Ireland and Cumbria (England).

The Scottish Government’s (SG) £28.75m 4G Infill Programme (S4GI), which has spent the past few years improving rural mobile voice and data (broadband) coverage by building new masts in rural parts of Scotland, has officially updated to announce that “mast build and 4G activation within the programme has been completed.“

Members of the Parliament of the Isle of Man (Tynwald) have backed calls for the Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority (CURA) to introduce a low-cost social tariff for vulnerable broadband users (e.g. unemployed people). Separately, Manx Telecom are being accused of “non-compliance with Universal Service Obligations“.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that their 1.8Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network has now “almost” covered 14 million premises, which comes after they ramped-up build to deploy 1 million premises per quarter. The operator also firmed up on their 30m premises ambition for 2030.

Fibrus Engineers Talking

Cabling solutions provider ACOME Group today caused a bit of confusion after they seemed to announce that network builder and ISP Fibrus, which is one of their UK partners, had extended their 2Gbps FTTP broadband network to cover 400,000 premises across England and Northern Ireland. But the actual figure is 354,000 (337k RFS).

A Warrington-based company called Sunningdale Solutions has revealed that they’re planning to build a new gigabit-capable UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to serve homes and businesses in rural parts of Lancashire (England), which may be complemented by a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network in certain locations.

Australian investment group Macquarie has reportedly placed broadband ISP and full fibre network operator KCOM, which is the dominant operator in Hull and is also expanding further out into East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England, under strategic review. The move could potentially result in a sale or merger of the business.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results of their latest 2024 consumer survey of UK mobile operators, which revealed the best and worst providers. Overall the four primary operators (O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK) came at or near the bottom of the table, while Tesco Mobile attracted the highest customer score.

The Scottish Government (SG) has announced that both of its past and present broadband roll-out programmes, accounting for a total public investment of £1bn, have now helped more than 1 million extra premises (homes and businesses) in poorly served areas to gain access to a faster broadband ISP network.

The provider offers up to £25k to projects and organisations that are aimed at improving lives in communities across the region.

Mobile operator Vodafone has issued a brief update on their progress under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which reveals that it has now deployed 4G (mobile broadband) network services to a total of 200 rural sites in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland (up from 57 a year ago).

Some of Giganet’s former customers have this week complained that they’ve suffered incorrect billing and cancellation problems after switching away to a different broadband ISP on Openreach’s UK network, which should normally be a smooth and largely automated migration process.

Infracapital-backed UK ISP Fibrus this week revealed that the £197m Project Stratum scheme in Northern Ireland, which is working spread a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into rural areas, is currently “on target” to cover 81,000 premises by June 2025, “on time and within budget.”
