Global IPv4 Internet Address Supply Hits Critical Level – ISPs Must Prep IPv6

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which among other things is the international organisation that has responsibility for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation (IANA use to do this), has warned that the global supply of IPv4 addresses has now reached a “critical level” and thus IPv6 adoption has become a “requirement for any network that needs to survive“.

Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire UK Broadband Rollout Update

The joint state aid supported £35.6 million project to roll-out BT’s “superfast broadband” (25Mbps+ FTTC/P) network to 91% of premises in Wiltshire by March 2016 and 94% of South Gloucestershire by the end of March 2015 has now helped to reach a total of 11,549 premises and more areas are due to be connected soon.

EE Bring 4G to 2588 UK Rural Villages and Small Towns and Boosts Speeds

Mobile operator EE has announced that their “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network will soon be expanded to cover 2,588 villages and small towns with populations under 10,000. At the same time the operator also plans to extend the footprint of its “double speed” (150Mbps) network to 40 towns and cities by the end of 2014 and there’s more..

UPD Lancashire Council Might Stop Funding BT FTTP Rollout in Dolphinholme

Campaigners who support B4RN’s community driven deployment of 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband in the Lancashire village of Dolphinholme will be pleased to learn that the county council looks set to stop the funding for BT’s rival deployment of 330Mbps capable FTTP in the area, but it may not be quite so clear cut.

UPDATE ASA UK Ban EE “Most Reliable Broadband” Claim After BT Moan

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a direct mailing advert for EE’s Home Broadband service after rival ISP BT complained that the promotions claim to offer “Britain’s most reliable broadband for staying connected” was misleading. But BT had less luck getting a promo for the ISPs BrightBox2 router taken down.

ICO Criticises Telecoms Operator EE UK for Nuisance Calls and Texts

The Information Commissioner’s Office has warned mobile operator EE that consumers have become tired of their nuisance sales calls and marketing texts, so much so that the regulator has even expressed concern about their “compliance with the law“. But there’s better news for BSkyB, which is now off the ICO’s poop list.

First Customers Benefit from Superfast Dorset FTTC Rollout with BT

The latest Q1-2013 (calendar) financial results for Vodafone UK have revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base appears to have stabilised at 59,000 customers (unchanged from the end of 2013), which follows last year’s Q2-2013 fall from 85,000.

The Shropshire County Council in England, which recently warned (here) that it was struggling to find match-funding for the Government’s proposed allocation of an extra £11.38m to boost the local coverage of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC) services, looks as though it might be considering a rival county-wide deployment of ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) and wireless technology.

The telecoms regulator has today pushed BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national phone and broadband network across the United Kingdom, to adopt new targets that aim to improve its quality of service by fostering faster installs, quicker repairs and making available more information about their performance to the public. Superfast broadband (FTTC) lines will also benefit from cheaper migrations and shorter contracts.

ISP PlusNet Slashes UK Business Broadband and Phone Prices

Internet provider PlusNet Business has slashed the price of their standard and superfast broadband + phone bundles by more than half for the first year of service, although Line Rental is still payable at the standard rate of £10.50 +vat per month with pay-as-you-go calls (add £4 for UK Anytime calls).

UK ISP Zen Internet Shuns Proposal for Voluntary P2P Piracy Warning Letters

The Regulatory Manager for UK ISP Zen Internet, Gary Hough, has criticised the Government’s efforts to introduce a new Voluntary Copyright Alert Programme (VCAP) of Internet piracy warning letters. Zen noted the distinct lack of engagement with the wider ISP industry and said that they currently had no intention of signing up to such a scheme.

Hundreds of New Windsor Park Homes Left to Wait Months for Broadband

BT Openreach Recruit 1600 New UK Engineers to Improve Service Standards

BTOpenreach, which is responsible for looking after BT’s national UK telecoms network, will soon be bolstered by an additional 1,600 engineers in order to help the operator meet Ofcom’s forthcoming quality of service requirements (i.e. faster fault fixing etc.) and assist in the roll-out of superfast broadband (FTTC/P) technologies.

The outspoken boss of business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has predicted that the latest generation of fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband connectivity will steadily remove the need for consumer to be forced into paying for a copper-line Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) on top of their Internet connectivity, but for BT it’s still too much of a “cashcow” to ignore.
