The communications regulator has today proposed to boost the maximum permissible “base station transmit power” in the 1800MHz radio spectrum band for 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE / WiMAX) based Mobile Broadband and voice services by +3dB, which could improve coverage and capacity.

The Telford and Wrekin council looks set to re-join the £24.6m Connecting Shropshire project in England, which is currently rolling out BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 93% of local premises by the end of Spring 2016, after it submitted a formal expression of interest.

The Business Development Manager for UK ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP), Alex Bloor, has lifted the lid on the occurrence of “borrowed” copper pairs, where an already active broadband or phone line is disrupted by a telecoms engineer (e.g. a BTOpenreach contractor like Kelly Communications) who incorrectly takes over the line for use elsewhere.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has announced that its 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network, which currently reaches more than 70% of the UK population, is now available from another 12 towns. Coverage has also been improved on “key routes” between Edinburgh – Glasgow and Cardiff – Swansea.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) will later today slash the cost of their superfast (‘up to’ 38Mbps) Sky Fibre Unlimited (FTTC) broadband package from £20 to just £7.50 per month for the first 6 months of service. Both new and existing customers should be able to take advantage.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has today ruled that Internet Service Providers (ISP) across the EU can now be ordered to block their customers from being able to access a copyright-infringing website (e.g. The Pirate Bay). But national courts will still have the final say.
