Worcestershire UK Confirms the Phase 2 Fibre Broadband Rollout Areas

The £20.75 million Superfast Worcestershire project in England has today revealed the next batch (phase two) of local communities that will benefit from a state aid supported upgrade to BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network (aims to pass 90% of local premises by mid-2016).

Consumer magazine Which? has today praised smaller broadband and phone providers for their quality, called for all ISPs to offer a Broadband Speed Guarantee to customers and awarded its coveted Recommended Provider gong to The Utility Warehouse and John Lewis in their latest consumer satisfaction survey. Zen Internet and PlusNet also won ‘Recommended’ status under the broadband-only section.

The Government’s Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, has told a recent Westminster Hall debate that their efforts to introduce a controversial Voluntary Copyright Alert Programme (VCAP) of Internet piracy warning letters, which would hit customers of the UKs largest broadband ISPs, “may be up and running before the end of the year“.

Aberdeen City Tenders for Free In-Building Wi-Fi Service in Public Buildings

The Aberdeen Council in Scotland has put out a new tender that offers grant funding of up to £300k for wireless infrastructure and a further £300k for network connectivity, available under the Accelerate Aberdeen Super Connected Cities programme, in order to roll-out a WiFi service in public buildings across the City.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has confirmed that in the coming weeks their existing Internet-based on-demand movie rental service – Sky Store – will also begin taking on Apple’s iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Prime (formerly Lovefilm) by offering movies which you can download to Buy-and-Keep.

The state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire project in England, which is working with BT to make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services available to 90% of local premises by the end of October 2014, has formally approved another £10m to boost the network’s coverage up to their target of 100% by the end of 2017.

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee, which examines the expenditure, administration and policy of the Government’s related department, has published its latest (6th) Online Safety report and found that website blocking by UK ISPs was “highly unlikely to be a suitable approach” for tackling adult pornography or violent material on the Internet.

ISP TalkTalk Hits UK Internet Traffic Record of 1 Terabit Per Second

Budget broadband and phone provider TalkTalk has passed a significant milestone after they reported that Internet data traffic on their network in the United Kingdom had recently peaked at over 1Tbps (Terabits per second) and “regularly reaches 990Gbs a day” (note: they mean 990Gbps and not total daily use).

EU ITRE Committee Approve Net Neutrality and Cheaper Roaming Rules

The European Parliament’s ITRE Industry Committee has this morning voted in favour of the new Telecoms Single Market Regulation, which proposes a raft of changes including measures to protect open Internet access from abuse by ISPs (Net Neutrality), ending EU mobile roaming charges, coordinating spectrum for wireless/mobile operators and various other measures like easier switching between broadband providers.

Three UK Launch New Plans But Cap Unlimited Mobile Broadband Tethering

Mobile operator Three UK has, much as we predicted last month (here), today dropped unlimited Mobile Broadband Tethering support from its “all-you-can-eat” data based tariffs and replaced it with a 2GB (GigaByte) usage cap. On the upside.. calls to 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers are now free from mobiles too.

UPDATE Political Censorship Fear as UK ISPs Blocked from Ukraine News Site

The growing crisis on Europe’s border between Ukraine and Russia, which centres on a dispute over ownership of the Crimea territory, took an unusual twist yesterday after it was spotted that Sky Broadband and other UK ISPs appeared to be restricting access to Ukrainian news site Tsn.ua. Oddly Sky claims it was blocked for being on a “white list” of websites (note to Sky: normally you unblock those).

Cumbria UK Publishes 2nd Attempt at a Final Broadband Coverage Map

After a lot of media and political pressure the £51m Connecting Cumbria project in England has published a higher resolution copy of their “Final Coverage” map for the local Broadband Delivery UK and BT supported roll-out of superfast fibre broadband services. Now if only there were some roads and other details (postcode data?) or maybe we’re just being picky.

Customers of TalkTalk have today become the unwitting recipients of the ISPs latest ‘Pricing Notification’ update, which has revealed a raft of price rises for line rental services (e.g. an increase from £15.40 to £15.95), call charges and broadband packages.
