SpaceX’s Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds via a mega constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has this week refreshed their range of plans for business customers and made them more affordable for those with lower data usage requirements. But there’s a nasty catch for some customers in the form of a 1Mbps speed cap.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G mobile services across “over” 3,500 postcodes in the Merseyside city of Liverpool (England), which should mean “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their proposals for the new Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which it hopes will help to “promote competition and investment” in gigabit broadband and business connectivity. Broadly speaking, the regulator will be updating and tweaking their existing approach, with few radical changes this time around.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their latest broadband ISP satisfaction survey, which questioned 4,347 UK adults (Dec 2024 to Jan 2025) about their internet providers. Overall three ISPs were labelled ‘Recommended Providers‘ – Zen Internet, Plusnet and Utility Warehouse, while NOW TV (NOW Broadband) and Virgin Media were ranked at the bottom.

No more scanning of QR codes.

But the company is now increasingly working to replace these with their modern ‘Stream’ set-top-boxes (STB) instead.

The FTTH Council Europe has just published their 2025 ranking of 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and coverage of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP networks. This sees the UK pass 21.4 million homes (up by 4.2m in the year) with take-up of 37.1% and a prediction that it’ll cover 31m by 2030. But growth has slowed a bit.

For the second time this week (here), the Government (DSIT) has published another round of contract modification notices for several of Wildanet, Fibrus, CityFibre and Quickline’s state aid funded Project Gigabit broadband roll-outs across several regions – North Yorkshire, Cornwall, Cumbria, Suffolk, Hampshire and Norfolk. The tweaks change both the level of public funding and premises target.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced the next batch of locations where their new 5G Standalone (SA) mobile network will be deployed and made it available to all new customers. By the end of March 2025, the new 5GSA network will be live and available to over 28 million people across 50 “major towns and cities” in the UK (over 40% of the population).

The Barnet Council in London has reached a wayleave agreement (legal land/property access) that will enable Openreach (BT) to deploy their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 8,000 households managed by the UK council’s social housing provider, Barnet Homes.

Gigaclear 2023 Engineer Working on Cabinet

Good news for customers of Abingdon-based alternative network provider Gigaclear. The ISP has now confirmed to ISPreview that they recently started rolling out IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) internet addressing across their full fibre (FTTP) broadband network. The deployment is currently halfway to completion.

Some customers of UK internet provider TalkTalk appear to be struggling to access certain websites, including major ones like github.io, due to what appears to be some sort of peering or routing issue. The ISP’s network teams are said to be “currently investigating” the ongoing issue.

The Essex County Council (ECC) in England has this afternoon confirmed that they’ve settled their legal dispute with Abingdon-based UK broadband ISP Gigaclear, which was originally raised last summer (here) over an alleged failure by the network operator to deliver on their contracted Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) build.

Around 800 premises in the East Yorkshire (England) port town of Goole (DN14) are experiencing protracted disruption to their FTTP broadband and phone services after a car crashed into one of UK ISP KCOM’s street cabinets on Sunday night at 10:55pm, which completely disconnected the apparatus from all of its cables.
