BT has today published their latest Q2-2014 (calendar) results and confirmed that its retail broadband base suffered a slowing of growth (+104k in Q2 vs +170k in Q1-2014) to total 7,385,000 customers. The operator has also revealed a new trial of superfast broadband FTTrn technology in London and confirmed that its FTTC network now reaches 20 million UK homes and businesses (premises passed).

The Tove Valley Broadband scheme (formerly Abthorpe Broadband Association) in Northamptonshire (England) has secured £123,000 of public funding from the Government’s Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which will allow them to roll-out a 1000Mbps capable fibre optic network across several villages.

The £40m+ Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England, which has so far helped 36,000 extra local premises to access BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network and aims to extend coverage out to 90% of the county by the end of 2015 (note: 85% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) and around 95% by 2017, has tentatively confirmed its next phase 4 roll-out areas.

RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

Customers who pay £4.99 a month for the Entertainment Pass on Sky’s broadband-based NOW TV service now have more than those annoying “Rights Restrictions” messages (here) to worry about after the live broadcast of popular TV show Game of Thrones (Season 4 : Episode 1) caused a surge in demand that disrupted connectivity.

The CEO of Business ISP XLN Telecom, Christian Nellemann, has said that the national rollout of superfast broadband technology is “crucial” to the United Kingdom’s small and medium sized businesses but called for the government to stop helping BT “maintain a monopoly on fibre services“.

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that they’re in final negotiations with BT to hopefully bring the new BTSport channels to customers on their own broadband and TV bundles via a new carriage deal.

Some of the country’s broadband ISPs have told ISPreview.co.uk that Rights Holders are putting pressure on them to prevent their broadband customers from being able to access two extra website (EZTV and Yify-Torrents), which have both been accused of facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).
