The Tove Valley Broadband scheme (formerly Abthorpe Broadband Association) in Northamptonshire (England) has secured £123,000 of public funding from the Government’s Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which will allow them to roll-out a 1000Mbps capable fibre optic network across several villages.

The £40m+ Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England, which has so far helped 36,000 extra local premises to access BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network and aims to extend coverage out to 90% of the county by the end of 2015 (note: 85% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) and around 95% by 2017, has tentatively confirmed its next phase 4 roll-out areas.

RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

Internet provider PlusNet has cut the cost of its superfast ‘Unlimited Fibre Broadband and Calls’ (FTTC) package in half from £19.99 to just £9.99 a month for the first 6 months of service. Meanwhile there are also plans for another rise in the cost of line rental and a product refresh to simplify their packages.

BT has today signed a multi-year agreement that will allow them to build a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform and services using EE’s 2G, 3G and 4G based network in the United Kingdom, which also means they’ll be “carefully” parting ways with their existing MVNO partner Vodafone UK.

Communications provider Entanet, which supplies a number of UK Internet providers with broadband services, has this week become the latest operator to publish plans for moving their existing O2/BE Wholesale based unbundled (LLU) lines away from that network and onto their BT-based platform.

Mobile operator O2 (O24G) look set to be the first to take on EE’s rival network after announcing a 29th August 2013 launch date and the first roll-out locations for their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network, which eventually aims to reach 98% of the UK population (indoor and outdoor).

Some of the country’s broadband ISPs have told ISPreview.co.uk that Rights Holders are putting pressure on them to prevent their broadband customers from being able to access two extra website (EZTV and Yify-Torrents), which have both been accused of facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has launched several new promotions including one that offers their unlimited broadband and free weekend calls bundle at half price (£5) for 12 months (6 months half price on their superfast FTTC package) or FREE if you take the Sky Sports pack. A £100 M&S Voucher is also available on their TV bundle.

A new study from RootMetrics has named EE as the fastest mobile broadband operator in Manchester (England) after it blitzed past rivals, including distant runner-up Three UK, to record an average download speed of 15.2Mbps (Megabits per second) and uploads of 9.4Mbps.
