The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today set out what position they will be taking at next month’s World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15), which among other things will seek to decide the radio spectrum frequencies for future WiFi and 5G based Mobile Broadband services.

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed the final details for their “early” 2016 auction of 190MHz worth of high-capacity spectrum in the 2.3GHz (2350MHz to 2390MHz) and 3.4GHz (3410MHz to 3600MHz) bands, which could be used for mobile (4G) and or other fixed wireless broadband services.

The next (5th) generation of 5G based Mobile Broadband technology is still roughly five years away, but that hasn’t stopped the Government getting an early start and today they’ve offered another £1m to help encourage businesses to find innovative uses for the service.

Chinese firm Huawei and Japanese telecoms giant NTT DOCOMO have conducted the world’s first large-scale field trial of next generation 5G mobile broadband technology using the sub-6GHz band, which has been able to achieve an impressive peak speed of 3.6Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The International Telecommunication Union has put a lid on the debate over the peak performance capabilities of future 5G (IMT-2020) based Mobile Broadband technology by defining its top speed as 20Gbps (Gigabits per second), which is 20 times faster than the 4G (IMT-Advanced) rate of 1Gbps.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has today launched a “major drive” to boost broadband connectivity in the capital, although it’s mostly the same stuff as we saw being announced last year. At least there’s now a map to depict just how bad the situation is, especially in the city centre.

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today signalled the start of yet another strategic review, which this time will examine the radio spectrum use of space-based science and satellite communication services. Ofcom’s review could affect the future availability of frequencies for 5G and other broadband technologies.

26th May, 2015 (0 Comments)

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has launched a new consultation on their proposed design for the late 2015 or early 2016 auction of radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which could be used for high-capacity Mobile Broadband connectivity (e.g. 4G). But some of the spectrum may be held back until the on-going market consolidation has settled.

The International Telecommunication Union has started a new Focus Group, which will help them to identify the network standardization requirements for future 5G based Mobile Broadband technologies. Related services are due to surface around 2020 and often tout peak data speeds of anything from 10Gbps to 100Gbps (Gigabits per second).

Who? A strange and unexpected press release just crossed our desk, which stems from a company in the Netherlands that we’ve not heard of before, Angie Communications. Essentially they plan to “aggressively” rollout a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 3 million premises and make “4.5G” and 5G mobile broadband available to 95% and 90% of the UK respectively by 2021.

20th April, 2015 (2 Comments)

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today published an update on their preliminary work to design a regulatory approach for future 5G (5th Generation) based Mobile Broadband technology, which identifies several bands in different parts of the 6GHz to 100GHz radio spectrum range that could be candidates for the service.

Nokia Networks and National Instruments (NI) have demonstrated a future 5G technology that can deliver peak rate Mobile Broadband data speeds of up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second), but as usual there’s a catch in the choice of frequency band.

Let’s get something straight, the next generation of 5G mobile technology probably won’t bring about world peace, fix famine, cure cancer or save that baby from a burning building; at least not literally. It’s a telecoms network upgrade, not superman. But in listening to some of the politicians speak you’d be forgiven for thinking that it could perform miracles.

At present the next generation of 5G based Mobile Broadband networks haven’t even been defined and the first commercial services aren’t expected to surface until around 2020. But that hasn’t stopped the Government from putting an early investment towards the distant future 6th Generation (6G) replacement for 5G. Well, sort of.

12th March, 2015 (56 Comments)

The United Kingdom’s national telecoms regulator has today announced the start of a major strategic review into the country’s digital communications market, which could have significant implications. It will look at everything from competition and investment, to future innovation and the availability of broadband, phone and mobile services.

24th February, 2015 (11 Comments)

Researchers working on the future 5th generation (5G) of Mobile Broadband technology at the University of Surrey in England claim to have achieved a staggering transfer speed of 1Tbps (Terabit per second), or 1,000,000Mbps (Megabits) in more familiar language, over their candidate technology.

A team of international scientists working out of Lancaster University in England have officially kicked off a new consortium called TWEETHER, which aims to harness the millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum (specifically 92-95GHz) in order to develop a new wireless network that could offer economical broadband connectivity with a capacity up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second).
