The European Commission (EC) has this week named the five winners of their annual 2017 European Broadband Awards, which saw Colchester’s 1Gbps open access passive fibre network in the UK (Essex) pick-up one of the awards for their deployment to 850 SMEs and 1,100 homes.

Comparison site Cable has published the winners of a huge new ISP survey, which interviewed 16,753 UK broadband customers to identify the best providers via five categories (reliability, value for money, customer service, speed and switching). Virgin Media and Plusnet came top.

The annual NextGen Digital Challenge Awards were held last night in London, which saw rural FTTH ISP B4RN win the ‘Place Making Award‘ for their efforts in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Meanwhile Diva Telecom scooped the ‘Connected Britain Award‘ for their Eltofts village project.

The latest 2017 P3 communications study of Mobile Network Operator performance in the United Kingdom, which involved drivetests, walktests and a crowdsourced assessment across 20 cities, has named EE as the best network for voice and data (3G / 4G) performance (Vodafone came 2nd).

The latest H2 2017 study of 3G and 4G mobile network performance in London by RootMetrics has once again awarded the best operator crown to EE, although rivals from O2, Vodafone and Three UK are catching up and the latter did at least manage to beat EE for “Call Performance“.

Consumer magazine PC Pro has published the latest results from their annual 2017 Awards event, which once again – for the 14th consecutive time – saw Zen Internet scoop the win for Best ISP (AAISP was the runner-up) and also Best Web Host (Tsohost was the runner-up).

Broadband providers Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have today been praised by Ofcom’s Q2 2017 UK consumer complaints report after they received fewer gripes than any other ISP for their service. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for BT and TalkTalk, which attracted the most complaints.

The latest biannual survey of UK phone and broadband providers by consumer magazine Which? has once again named Zen Internet as the best overall ISP (85% for customer satisfaction), but the same could not be said for TalkTalk that continues to languish at the bottom on a score of 40%.

The firm behind the Speedtest.net service, Ookla, has reintroduced a monthly country ranking of global mobile and fixed broadband speeds. In their first report we find the United Kingdom ranked 24th fastest in the world with an average download of 49.22Mbps (fixed) and 25.83Mbps (mobile).

The latest H1 2017 report from RootMetrics has revealed the 4G mobile performance and availability of O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE across England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland. Overall EE takes the crown for Mobile Broadband speed and coverage, while Three UK won for reliability and calls.

The Internet Service Providers Association UK (ISPA) has tonight named the winners of their 19th annual 2017 Internet industry awards, which once again saw Hyperoptic being crowned as the ‘Best Superfast Broadband‘ ISP and Gigaclear securing the new ‘Best Rural Broadband‘ award.

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2017 study of UK consumer complaints about fixed line Broadband, Phone, Pay TV and Mobile services has praised Sky (Sky Broadband) for receiving the fewest gripes. Meanwhile BT, TalkTalk and Vodafone are highlighted for attracting the most complaints.

The first half of 2017 has seen another rise in average fixed line broadband download speeds to 28.21Mbps, albeit mostly fuelled by the on-going migration of consumers from older ADSL lines and on to newer “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services. Meanwhile EE is still king for Mobile Broadband.

The Comms Business magazine has unveiled the winners of their annual 2017 Comms Business Awards event, which took place last Thursday night in London. A number of ISPs received awards at the event, including Gamma, Onecom, Vaioni Wholesale and Daisy Wholesale etc.

Mobile operator EE has come out on top in a new RootMetrics study of YouTube’s video streaming via 4G and 3G mobile networks in London, which rated all four primary mobile operators by several criteria (e.g. video resolution, time taken to start a video, playback freezes / buffering etc.).

Consumer magazine Which? has published the outcome from their first 2017 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Giffgaff top with a customer score of 81%. Sadly Vodafone and EE could both be found languishing at the bottom of the table on 50% (tied).

The Internet Telephony Services Providers Association (ITSPA), which represents the United Kingdom’s Voice-over-IP (VoIP) industry, has today announced the winners of this year’s ITSPA Awards event. Curiously though the ‘Best Consumer VoIP‘ category seems to have vanished.
