Residents of Garsdale and Dentdale in rural Cumbria (England) are debating two possible fixes for securing faster broadband, which follows last year’s dramatic failure of the Fibre GarDen (Digital Dales) scheme. The £37m Superfast Dorset project in England has officially announced that 90% of premises in the county can now order a superfast broadband (24Mbps+) service thanks to their on-going roll-out of FTTC/P connectivity with BT, which has hit the target several months ahead of schedule.

New customers looking to join BT may like to know that the ISP has cut the price of their unlimited home broadband (both ADSL and superfast FTTC) packages again and on top of that their 20GB BTMobile plan has been reduced from £20 to £16 per month for existing BT customers (£21 for non-BT subscribers).

Pure fibre optic ISPs Gigaclear and Hyperoptic have offered a unique insight into the current challenges with rolling out new ultrafast broadband infrastructure across the United Kingdom, not least in regards to the difficulties of going up against a state aid supported BT and the question of whether or not to separate Openreach.

2nd February, 2016 (48 Comments)

Reports are coming in of sporadic problems with gaining access to BT’s websites and also an apparent nationwide fault affecting broadband connectivity on their network, which at the present time does not appear to be hitting TalkTalk or Sky Broadband’s unbundled lines.

BT has revealed some interesting new information on their UK plans for deploying ultrafast 300-500Mbps G.fast broadband technology, as well as SoGEA’s trial status, a possible extension of VDSL (FTTC) Vectoring, a new 18Mbps “Slow Speed” product for upgrading sub-2Mbps rural lines and more.

The situation in Welshwood Park (Essex, England) is not your ordinary tale of slow broadband and stems from a decision 20 years ago, when locals refused to allow new cables to be laid. Sadly this made it harder to upgrade the area and so until now residents have been isolated from faster services.

BT has today released its latest Q4 2015 results (calendar) and confirmed that their retail division has a total of 7,996,000 broadband subscribers (up by +130K vs +82K in Q3), with 3,689,000 of those on their superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) service (up by +250K in Q4 vs +212K in Q3). A large build of new homes on the outskirts of Buckingham (England) is still struggling to be recognised as needing faster broadband via the state aid fuelled Connected Counties project, which is because the local authority and BT were unable to identify its existence.. even though it’s kind of hard to miss.

The annual uSwitch.com Broadband Awards 2015 were held last night and suffice to say that two ISPs dominated the evening more than most, Virgin Media and Plusnet. Both providers managed to sweep a bunch of gongs in different categories, although Virgin clearly picked up the most.
