The Connecting Devon and Somerset project, which suffered a big setback in June 2015 after failing to reach a deal to extend “superfast broadband” coverage with BT (here), will be hoping to get back on its horse today when it meets with 32 alternative suppliers to debate a new contract.

A new report from security consultant Paul Moore has revealed that many of the United Kingdom’s major broadband ISPs, including BT, PlusNet, EE, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk, have significant vulnerabilities in their systems that could be exploited by hackers. But some, such as EE and TalkTalk, did far worse than others.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has begun construction of their £7.5 million project to deliver a new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Essex (England), which should benefit 4,500 premises in the Epping Forest area by the end of 2017.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published its Connected Nations 2015 report and confirmed that 83% of premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service (up from 75% in 2014), with take-up reaching 27% (up from 22%). But they also changed the definition of “ultrafast” speeds from 100Mbps+ to 300Mbps+.

The national UK telecoms regulator has ruled that they have “reasonable grounds” for believing that BT contravened 13A.8 and 8A.8 of their Significant Market Power (SMP) conditions, which means that the operator has not provided all of the information that it is required to supply.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has called on the European Commission to help stop any future allocations of state aid going towards BTOpenreach’s “fibre broadband” network expansion, which they fear would create an “unacceptable risk of overbuild of existing networks.”

BT has today prepared for Black Friday by cutting the price of both their unlimited ‘up to’ 17Mbps broadband and 38Mbps BTInfinity packages, while also throwing in a prepaid MasterCard (worth £50 to £100), a £50 Love2shop voucher and reducing the BTSport Pack contract to just 30 days.

The 2010 decision that helped to grow BT’s broadband based TV business, which involved Ofcom imposing regulation that required Sky to offer wholesale access (“Wholesale Must Offer“) to their Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 channels (at prices set by the regulator), has today been removed.

Several members of the public and Sky (Sky Broadband) have succeeded in getting the Advertising Standards Authority to ban a press, website, poster and TV ad for BT’s various TV and broadband bundles, all of which claimed that BTSport was “free” even though there were caveats and contradictions galore.

Rivals are today hoping that BT may have dented its position in Ofcom’s on-going Strategic Review after the UK telecoms regulator revealed that the operator had billed £1.7m from part of their EE mobile merger to its “functionally separate” Openreach division, which was called “inappropriate“.

Politics in Worcestershire (England) can sometimes be messy, although one local councillor has now taken it to another level by saying that the use of state aid funding to improve broadband connectivity would only help people who choose to “live out in the sticks with the badgers and rabbits“.
