Broadband users with connections that are based off BTOpenreach’s national network (e.g. BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk), specifically those who reside around the eastern side of Edinburgh in Scotland (East Lothian), appear to be suffering from a curious fault that is causing downloads to corrupt.

The Dunalley Primary School, which alongside some other 35-40 homes in Pittville suffers from only having access to old style ADSL2+ connectivity, has been told by BT that it would need to have a “whip-round” in order to raise the £21,000 needed for an upgrade because it was not “commercially viable“.

Several major telecoms operators (Cityfibre, Virgin Media, euNetworks and Zayo) have joined forces to create the Infrastructure Investors Group (IIG) and they oppose the UK regulators move to open up access to BT’s Dark Fibre lines for rival providers. BT will be pleased.

The latest information on the availability of true ultrafast fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) services, most of which are capable of delivering Gigabit class speeds (1000Mbps), has estimated that some 351,642 premises in the United Kingdom are now within reach of such a service (up from 251,522 last year).

The Suffolk Coastal District Council in England has said that a successful pilot of a rural fixed wireless broadband network, which covers a number of areas (Shingle Street, Aldeburgh etc.) and was first launched in 2012 (here), could soon be expanded to cover more locations.

After 20 months of waiting BT finally appears to be progressing its pledge to spend £50m on expanding the commercial roll-out of superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P/B + FTTrN) services to 400,000 extra premises in UK cities, with the first to benefit being in London (Kensington, Chelsea and Tech City etc.).

The national telecoms regulator has opened a new investigation after Vodafone complained that BTOpenreach failed to meet its obligations to them by both “delaying provision” of its Ethernet (high-capacity data line) services without their consent and then “failing to compensate” for that delay.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project has revealed that a further £21m is to be spent on expanding superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to 95% of local premises across the county. As a result discussions are now taking place with BT in order to “draw up contracts for the start of phase three“.

An independent study of broadband Internet connectivity in Wales has claimed that 80% of premises in the country should now have access to a superfast connection (30Mbps+), which rises to 81.3% when you use the Government’s definition of 24Mbps+. But rural areas still have a long way to go.

As expected BT has confirmed that their first large-scale (2,000 premises) live customer trial of future G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), which will initially offer Internet speeds of up to 330Mbps (rising to 500Mbps in the future), have begun in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire).

The battle over who controls the rights to premium live TV sports content in the United Kingdom has continued today after BT announced that they had outbid Sky (Sky Broadband) to secure the exclusive broadcast rights for the Ashes series in Australia from 2016 to 2021.

BT has cut the cost of their unlimited standard (up to 17Mbps ADSL2+) and superfast (up to 38Mbps FTTC Infinity) broadband packages to just £5 and £10 per month respectively for the first 12 months of service, plus they’ve also reintroduced Sainsbury’s shopping vouchers worth £75 and £125 respectively.
