The Government is allegedly anticipating that it will need another £500m to bring superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to the final 5% of premises across the United Kingdom, which may well be achieved through a new “levy” (TAX) on broadband ISPs. Warning, we’ve been here before.

After a long wait some 2,700 premises in Rothesay, which is the main town of around 5,000 people on the Isle of Bute (West Scotland), have finally been given access to “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC) connectivity as part of the wider Digital Scotland project.

A row over competition in the UK market for Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) services has erupted after broadband ISP TalkTalk accused Vodafone of “withdrawing entirely from the MVNO market“, which would seriously limit the choices for BT and EE’s rivals when hunting for an alternative supplier.

The CEO of BTOpenreach, Joe Garner, has warned that Ofcom’s new 2015 Strategic Review of Digital Communications is allegedly at risk of being “hijacked by corporate rivalries” and that a better solution to the future telecoms landscape might come from less regulation and potentially higher prices to help boost investment. Well they would say that.

On 29th July Microsoft will release its new Windows 10 operating system software, which is being offered as a free upgrade to millions of existing Windows customers around the world. But broadband ISPs are nervous about the impact that so many subscribers downloading the 3GB+ (GigaByte) update could have on their networks.

BTOpenreach has told ISPreview.co.uk that the first large-scale residential trial of their future G.fast broadband technology (details), which the telecoms operator expects to sell via the Next Generation Access 2 (NGA2) tag, will begin next month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and ISPs are now being invited.

As expected BT has today revealed the first solid details and price of their new 4K Ultra HD TV package, which claims to include “Europe’s very first live sports Ultra HD channel” (BTSport Ultra HD) and a new 4K capable 1TB YouView (IPTV) set-top-box. But you’ll need a faster than “superfast” broadband speed.

The Superfast Telford project in Shropshire (England) has officially launched today, which follows last year’s signing of a new state aid supported £5.6m contract with BT (here) that aims to extend superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services to reach 98% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2017.

The telecoms regulator has today published a new discussion document as part of their major Strategic Review of Digital Communications, which asks for feedback on the vexed question of whether Openreach should be completely separated from BT so as to boost UK broadband and phone competition.

The Government is nearly ready to join with Rights Holders and four of the country’s largest broadband ISPs to kick off a major “multi-media education campaign“, which will encourage Internet users to “do the right thing” and use legal services instead of piracy. Warning letters (email alerts) will also be sent to some broadband subscribers.

BT has reduced the standard cost of their Unlimited BTInfinity 1 (up to 38Mbps FTTC) + Weekend Calls bundle to £10 per month and it will remain on offer at this price until 28th July. Plus new BTMobile customers are also being offered an extra £10 iTunes or £10 Amazon Voucher.

The Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, has promised to make it “absolutely clear” where superfast broadband will be delivered during the coming autumn and he will publish a firm plan for reaching the final 5% “before the end of the year“. But he also asked colleagues to stop their “long whinge” against the project.

A new report claims that around 7 out of 10 Sky Broadband customers have enabled the ISPs network-level filtering (Parental Controls), which was enforcedly introduced last year by all of the largest broadband ISPs to help block “adult content” from young eyes. Sadly it doesn’t always work as intended.

The £410m Digital Scotland project claims that the on-going fight to deploy BT’s faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services into areas that were previously hobbled by the dreaded Exchange Only Lines (EOL) is having a strong impact, with around 60,000 such premises in 130 locations having benefitted.
