Residents and businesses living in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides have finally benefitted from the on-going BT and Digital Scotland project, which has successfully deployed “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC) services to 3,600 premises in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

BT says that in the future their Internet and phone related UK engineering tasks could be improved, especially in remote rural areas, by harnessing semi-autonomous flying drones to “deliver urgent parts for our network” or provide “temporary broadband access” (please don’t call it Fibre-to-the-Drone).

Internet provider BT Business will today introduce a new offer on their standard broadband (up to 17Mbps ADSL2+) products, which means that new customers will benefit from being able to take the first three months of service for free (available until 30th August 2015).

New research claims that the first Superfast Cornwall contract, which recently completed and expanded the reach of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 95% of premises in the English county (up from the original target of 80%), has so far delivered a local economic benefit worth £186.1m.

Worcester-based fixed wireless ISP Airband, which yesterday won a separate open market contract to deploy superfast broadband to 5,800 premises across the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks in England (here), could form part of a consortium that will bid for the full Devon and Somerset contract after it failed to reach a deal with BT.

The East Sussex County Council, which is working in partnership with Brighton and Hove City, has today become one of the last local authorities in England to sign a Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract to help expand the reach of superfast broadband connectivity to thousands more homes.

BT has tweaked some of their Internet and mobile package features and prices by adding 1000 minutes to the BTMobile 2GB tariff, cutting the cost of their superfast Unlimited BTInfinity (FTTC) service to just £12.50 a month and returning Sainsbury’s vouchers worth £75 to £125 to their home broadband deals.

A small but mildly comical change has been made in the Government’s publicity drive for the Broadband Delivery UK project. Somebody somewhere finally recognised that those big red and white “speed limit” signs, which are often used to highlight the top speed of 80Mbps for FTTC “fibre broadband” lines, needed an “up to” prefix.

Entanet, which supplies broadband and telecoms services to a number of UK ISPs and businesses, says they’re “not convinced” by BT’s hope of being able to replace their old traditional phone services, including a relaxation of related regulation, with a new pure IP based network within the next 10 years.

The West Sussex Better Connected scheme in England, which is working with BT to expand the coverage of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to around 98% of local homes and businesses by Spring 2016 (90% will get “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+), has signed a new deal that will extend this to another 3,000+ premises by the end of 2017.

The communications regulator has today published their latest Q1-2015 consumer complaints report, which saw overall complaint volumes continue to fall across most of the major UK mobile, pay tv, fixed line phone and broadband sectors. But the news isn’t so good for EE, which has seen gripes surge.

The Superfast West Yorkshire project in England, which is aiming to roll-out BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to 97% of local homes and businesses by the end of September 2015 (708,000 total premises), has signed a new £13m deal to extend this to another 28,000 premises.

The second round of contracts for the Government’s Superfast Extension Programme (SEP), which is designed to push UK coverage of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services from 90% in early 2016 to 95% by the end of 2017, has in some cases struggled to reach a deal with BT and the latest contract to fall foul is for Devon and Somerset in England.

Broadband and phone providers PlusNet, Virgin Media and the Post Office have come top of a new survey of customer service quality, which questioned some 14,000 respondents about their experiences. Sadly TalkTalk / AOL and EE could all be found at the lowest rated end of the scale.
