The communications regulator has today published their latest quarterly consumer complaints report to the end of 2014 and unsurprisingly, despite a general flatness in complaint volumes, there are still some familiar names topping the tables. We’re looking at you EE (fixed broadband and phone), Vodafone (mobile) and BT (Pay TV).

Netflix, the popular Internet movie and TV streaming provider, has just published their latest April 2015 ISP Speed Index update for the United Kingdom and revealed that Virgin Media is still holding the top spot with a score of 3.74Mbps (Megabits per second). But take with the usual pinch of salt.

The Onlincolnshire project in the East Midlands of England, which is currently working with BT to roll-out FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services to “at least” 89% of all premises in the county by April 2016, appears to have briefly hit a snag with a small EU funding shortfall.

As expected the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire project in England will soon be extended, putting “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity within reach of thousands more homes and businesses, after the local authority officially signed a Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT.

In a controversial twist the Government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has called on a superfast broadband project in Rothbury (Northumberland), which received a slice of state aid, to repay any benefits derived from claw-back (as opposed to reinvesting into better coverage).

We’re no fans of the musical chairs approach to voucher discounts, which seem to change weekly, but BT has done an unusual new twist. New customers who join one of their BTInfinity (FTTC) “fibre broadband” packages will now also get a £125 Prepaid Visa Card, which reduces to £75 for standard broadband (ADSL) subscribers.

The Connect8 campaign, which represents the residents of eight rural villages in southern Oxfordshire where BT have refused to upgrade (Howe Hill, Britwell Hill, Cookley Green, Greenfield, Park Corner, Pishill with Stonor, Russells Water and Swyncombe), looks set to adopt a fixed wireless broadband network to fix the problems.

The national UK telecoms operator, BT, has today published the latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar) and confirmed that their retail business added +121,000 new broadband subscribers in the quarter (up from +119k in Q4 2014) to total 7,713,000, which includes 3,010,000 on BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +266k vs +209k in Q4 2014).

The Connected Counties project, which is working with BT and the Broadband Delivery UK programme to bring faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity to 90% of premises in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire (England) by April 2016, looks set to reach more areas after a new extension contract was signed.

The Digital Derbyshire project, which is working with BT and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme to make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity available to 95% of local premises by the end of 2016, looks set to reach more areas after a new Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract was signed.

Ordinarily the news that BT is bringing fibre optic broadband (FTTC/P) cables to your area would be welcome. But it’s not always so and sometimes the use of public money to help upgrade the smallest of UK rural areas, especially when a “superfast” (24Mbps+) capable provider is already serving local customers, can raise concerns.

In an entirely unsurprising development the shareholders of BT have today voted in favour of the operators £12.5bn move to buy mobile operator EE from current owners Deutsche Telekom (Germany) and Orange (France), although the final regulatory approval will take a lot longer to achieve and may extract concessions.

Some of BT’s consumer TV customers have written in to report that the ISP appears to have added five new premium channels to their service (418 Comedy Central Extra, 431 MTV Music, 490 Lifetime, 491 H2 and 542 Movies 24) and this seems to compliment a wider package refresh. TalkTalk customers should also see the channels.

The results from the annual Broadband Genie 2015 survey have been announced, which saw PlusNet come top in four of the five survey categories (overall satisfaction score of 76%) to secure the Best Broadband Provider award. But Virgin Media (75%) and Sky Broadband (73%) weren’t far behind.

Back in March we reported that BTOpenreach’s roll-out of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP – ITU G.998.4) technology, which can improve the performance of their ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines, had hit a few snags (here) with some customers losing performance, connectivity and or suffering higher latency.
