It’s well known that significant cable damage in rural areas can sometimes take significantly longer for BTOpenreach’s engineers to fix than in busy urban locations, where more people will feel the pain. Sadly this appears to be the case for 40 homes in the village of Wonersh, but the bigger issue is now one of compensation.

The North and North East Lincolnshire council in East England has now officially signed a second Superfast Extension Programme contract with BT to bring the operators “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to even more premises.

The Kent and Medway councils in England appear to have quietly signed a second Broadband Delivery UK contract with BT, which will see the operator extend their FTTC/P based superfast broadband (24Mbps+) network beyond the existing coverage target of 91% by the end of 2015 (note: 95% will be covered by the “fibre broadband” footprint).

Three of the biggest UK telecoms and broadband giants, including BT, Virgin Media and KC (KCOM), have jointly written a new letter to the national communications regulator in an attempt to dissuade Ofcom from making any changes that might require them to provide access to their Dark Fibre Optic lines.

The annual 2015 Halifax Rural Areas Quality of Life Survey has named Rutland in the East Midlands countryside as the best place to live in the Great British countryside because of its “good broadband“, health and life expectancy, crime rate, weather, employment, school results and personal wellbeing.

BTOpenreach has set a trial date for the ability to order a naked superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC / VDSL) service, which means you could take the broadband without also having to pay a separate fee for the phone line rental (aka – Naked VDSL, Single Order GEA-FTTC or SoGEA). There’s also a small update on VDSL Amplifiers and Vectoring.

The Telford and Wrekin Council (Shropshire, England), after sitting out the first phase of the national Broadband Delivery UK plan, has signed a £5.6m contract with BT that will extend superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to reach 98% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2017.

The £21m Superfast Worcestershire (England) project has signed a second £6.2m Broadband Delivery UK contract with BT that will see the operator push their “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network out to reach an additional 8,000 homes and businesses (95% coverage) by Summer 2018.

The Nottingham City Council and BT have today signed a new contract that will see the telecoms operator deploy free public WiFi wireless Internet hotspots across much of the city centre, which should benefit 310,000 residents as well as local businesses and visitors etc.

Customers of BT’s consumer broadband service should avoid using the ISPs Home Hub routers for business style VoIP phone setups because of a seemingly deliberate built-in weakness that, no matter what security settings you choose on the hub, it will always leave port 5060 open.

South Yorkshire (England) might have been late to the Broadband Delivery UK game, due to the infamous Digital Region disaster of prior years, but after last year’s signing of a contract with BT to upgrade the area we’re pleased to report that the project now has an official deployment map.

In an unsurprising move BT has agreed to extend their contract with the Scotland-based Emtelle Group, which manufactures cable duct (plastic piping that encases underground fibre optic cables) as well as sub-duct and blown fibre products at its two plants in Hawick and Jedburgh, for another four years until 2019.

Earlier this year BTOpenreach confirmed (here) that they were deploying Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP – ITU G.998.4) technology to improve the performance of their ‘up to’ 40-80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines. But at least one ISP has noticed that this is also increasing latency times by around 15ms (miliseconds) and in other cases a loss of speed is observed on some lines.

The plan to deploy a new network of free public WiFi hotspots across Newcastle and Gateshead in north east England, which last year took a hit after the project’s original partner (Spain’s GOWEX) collapsed due to falsified accounts (here), looks set to continue after the local authorities signed a deal with BT instead.

BT has today taken the wraps off their new 4G consumer mobile phone service (BTMobile), which is underpinned by EE’s national network and will turn the United Kingdom’s largest telecoms operator into a quad-play monster. The new SIM-Only tariffs start from just £5 a month for their existing broadband customers (prices rise by £5 for non-BT subscribers), which is all good unless you demand data Tethering.

The CSW Broadband project, which recently signed an extended deal to bring BT’s “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network to “nearly” 94% of Warwickshire, Solihull and Coventry by summer 2019, has revealed the next batch of areas that can expect to receive faster connectivity in the very near future.

The £24.62m Superfast Essex project in England, which aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 87% of local homes and businesses by the end of summer 2016, has agreed to continue their partnership with BT and extend the coverage to a further 51,000 premises.
