Shropshire Unable to Solve Broadband Funding Woes via Growth Fund

The Shropshire County Council (SCC) has been dealt another blow in its on-going attempts to secure £11.38m of funding to extend their coverage of superfast broadband to 95%+ by 2017 after the UK Government refused to allow the council to match the funding allocation by drawing on £7.5m set aside via the new Local Growth Deals.

UPD BT Criticised by Campaign for Better Broadband in London’s Square Mile

The City of London Corporation has criticised BT for an “unacceptable” failure to deliver superfast broadband connectivity to businesses based within the heart of London’s Square Mile, which it hopes to put right by developing a new strategy and launching a campaign to help map demand for the service.

UK ISP Primus Saver to Scrap and Revamp Home Broadband Packages

Bargain hunters looking to take Primus Saver’s ultra-cheap £1.20 per month (plus £13.99 line rental) broadband and phone bundle, which comes with a 20GB usage allowance, free router and free UK evening and weekend calls, should take note that the ISP will soon withdraw it in favour of new “totally unlimited” packages. The existing fibre (FTTC) deals will also soon be gone.

BT Wifi Brings Fibre Fuelled Wireless Internet to RAF Northolt

Around 2,000 military and civilian personnel at RAF Northolt in London can now get online via a new WiFi Hotspot based wireless Internet access service after BT completed the installation of the new “high-speed” network via 480 access points today.

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband Programme in England has today confirmed the next round (Phase 3) of areas that can expect to benefit from the councils state aid supported roll-out of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services, which aim to reach “at least” 90% of local premises by the end of 2015 and 95% by 2017.

Cable Ship “Resolute” Brings Fibre Optic Broadband to the Isles of Scilly

The £132m Superfast Cornwall project has announced that the cable ship called ‘Resolute’ will today complete the first major phase of a £3.7m effort to divert two unused submarine fibre optic cables to the Isles of Scilly (the cables had previously been used for communications between the UK, Ireland and Spain).

UK ISP Adult Internet Website Blocking Report Finds Limited Take-up

Ofcom has today published a new report that looks at the measures adopted by four of the largest broadband ISPs (BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband) to help parents “protect children from harmful content online” by offering network-level filtering (censorship) systems to block adult sites. But adoption by new subscribers is fairly limited and there have been a number of errors.

The £40m+ Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England, which has so far helped 36,000 extra local premises to access BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network and aims to extend coverage out to 90% of the county by the end of 2015 (note: 85% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) and around 95% by 2017, has tentatively confirmed its next phase 4 roll-out areas.

The Labour-led Telford and Wrekin council in England, which two years ago dropped out of the £24.6m Connecting Shropshire project that was setup with BT to improve local broadband connectivity, are preparing to put a £2m funding request into the related Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme to help 96% of premises gain access to superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds.

The Government, Rights Holders and four of the country’s largest broadband ISPs, including Virgin Media, BT, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband, have resolved their differences and announced the launch of a new “education programme” to help combat Internet piracy (copyright infringement) by sending warning letters to customers suspected of sharing “illegal” copyright content via File Sharing (P2P) networks.

The UK communications regulator has launched another mini consultation (Call for Input) on the long road to introducing their new broadband and phone switching process, which once live could now be expanded to more fixed-line operators than just those operating off BT’s national copper telecoms network (e.g. KC and Virgin Media’s cable network).

The £15m Get Digital Faster project, which is working with the EU and Broadband Delivery UK office to extend BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to a further 45,000 premises in the Greater Manchester (England) area by March 2016 (900k+ have already been passed), has finally upgraded the first street cabinet in Fowler Street.
