The £409.8 million Digital Scotland scheme, which seeks to make BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 85% of local premises by the end of 2015 and “around” 95% by the end of 2017 (84% by 2016 for HIE), has named the next communities and local authority areas to be upgraded by summer 2014.

The Managing Director of UK business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has criticised BT for “short-sighted and self-absorbed behaviour” after he completed on a new flat in London only to find that the operator was installing older copper phone and broadband cables into the premises instead of true fibre optic.

The largely community funded and built B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) project, which has been rolling out a 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband network in parts of rural Lancashire (England, UK), has vented frustration at BT after the operator began deploying its own FTTP service in one of their areas by using public money.

The Government’s Culture Secretary, Maria Miller, confirmed during a meeting yesterday that the former Commercial Director of the London 2012 Olympics Organising Committee, Christopher Townsend, would now lead its Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project. A launch date for the new £10m Competitive Fund for rural areas was also revealed.

BT Openreach has made a small reduction to the base cost of having a new phone and or broadband line installed, which applies to both the operators standard Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and fully unbundled LLU (MPF) services.

BT has today announced the appointment of Joe Garner (aged 44), the former head of HSBC’s UK bank, to be the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its Openreach division when current boss, Liv Garfield, steps down to become CEO of water company Severn Trent.

The Government has proposed a new £10 million scheme, which would be based off its existing Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, to help deploy superfast broadband services across 90% of South Yorkshire in England (most likely with BT’s help). The region suffered a £155m failure last year when the alternative Digital Region network collapsed.

Brash Solutions, an IT services company, has heavily criticised BT’s wholesale division (they probably also mean BTOpenreach) for rolling out superfast broadband (FTTC) services to residential parts of Berkhamsted in West Hertfordshire (England) while ignoring the “majority of the High Street and business offices“.

Telecoms and networking kit manufacturer ZyXEL has predicted a “steep rise” in demand for superfast broadband FTTC (VDSL) based Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5 / G.vector) services and hardware across Europe during 2014 as network operators, such as BT, move out of the pilot phase and seek to improve Internet speeds.

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru project, which aims to make faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016, has revealed a new list of communities that are scheduled to be enabled with BT’s new network by the end of March 2015.

The latest consumer Internet speed testing data for December 2013 reveals that Virgin Media has maintained its position as the fastest broadband ISP with a download speed of 35.387Mbps (Megabits per second). By contrast the overall national average download speed for all the largest providers was 18.376Mbps and uploads hit 3.320Mbps.

The United Kingdom is home to several million hybrid fibre FTTC superfast broadband ISP subscribers but to date most of those have been forced to connect to the service by linking an existing router to one of BTOpenreach’s VDSL modems. Now a new breed of router has emerged that integrates VDSL and here are some of the options.

BTOpenreach has moved to comply with the requirements of Ofcom’s earlier Leased Lines Charge Control (LLCC), which was published as part of the telecom regulators Business Connectivity Market Review, and has raised its Excess Construction Charges (ECC) by just over 1%.

Several major broadband ISPs, including BT and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), have both reported record breaking levels of Internet traffic over Christmas Day compared with the same time last year. For example, BT’s consumer data traffic peaked at 10pm with a transfer rate of 1,086,822 Megabits per second.
