The British Bankers Association has called on the Government to invest more money into delivering universal broadband and mobile connectivity to plug not-spots and thus allow more customers to take advantage of mobile and Internet banking, which is becoming increasingly popular.

British mobile giant Vodafone confirms that they’ve held talks with global cable operator Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media in the United Kingdom, about a “possible” and mutually beneficial “exchange” of some European businesses. But the idea of a huge £100bn+ mega merger appears to be off the table.

The latest Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2015-2019 report from PwC has predicted that revenues from Mobile Internet access (Mobile Broadband etc.) are set to overtake fixed line broadband services in 2017, increasing by an annual growth rate of 7.1% to reach £7bn by 2019 (the highest in Western Europe).

A new research note from Berenberg Bank has estimated that BT’s on-going £12.5bn effort to buy mobile operator EE could in the long-term be good news for investors, but they also predict that it will result in Virgin Media ending their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) deal with the UK mobile giant.

A new online YouGov poll of 100 IT decision makers in Scotland, which was commissioned by Cityfibre, has reported that 92% of respondents view high quality, fast broadband as important to the success of their company and yet 52% felt as if connectivity in Scotland was worse than other parts of the UK.

Telecoms giant BT has today submitted its official response to the Competition and Markets Authority‘s (CMA) review of their £12.5bn move to buy mobile operator EE. As part of this the operator has said that its acquisition would “enhance” rather than hurt competition in the UK telecoms market.

The cost of domestic grade business connectivity is falling after BT Business slashed the price of their broadband and phone bundles, with some packages reducing by almost half over the usual 24 month contract term and others seeing a more general reduction of -£5 per month off the rental price.

The Government’s Chancellor is currently preparing a second “emergency” Budget 2015 for 8th July 2015 and as such the Institute of Directors (IoD), which represents 34,500 business leaders and directors, has used that as an opportunity to call for more spending on infrastructure, with broadband connectivity top of the list.

In a surprise move Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review (BCMR2016) has done a U-turn on its 2012 policy by proposing that rival ISPs, specifically those that provide Leased Lines, should be granted access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network (i.e. un-lit fibre optic lines that have spare capacity for coping with future demand).

UK ISP TalkTalk has posted their latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar), which revealed that the provider added +47k broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 4,283,000 (sharply up from +15k added in Q4 2014). But there’s bad news for some of the recent off-net (BT based) broadband customer gains from Virgin Media and Tesco.
