UK ISP BT Business has today extended the availability of their converged HALO packages to include small business customers, which combines their “fibre broadband“, 4G unlimited mobile and digital phone line (app based) service into a single bundle from £42.95 +vat per month. There’s also a new Small Business Support Scheme.

The European operations of broadband ISP Bigblu (BBB Europe), which supplies various satellite and fixed wireless internet access services to consumers across the UK and parts of EU, has been acquired by satellite operator Eutelsat for a consideration of c.£38m (just as their new high speed Konnect satellite is due to enter service).

BT has today published their Q1 2020/21 results, which reveals that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 5.81 million UK premises (up from 5.4m last quarter) and that includes 2.98m on FTTP (up from 2.57m) and 2.83m on G.fast (up from 2.81m). Plus 5G via EE is now live in 100 cities and towns.

Low cost UK internet provider TalkTalk is confirmed to have quietly rejected a takeover bid by one of its biggest investors (Toscafund) last year, which would have valued the entire company at an impressive £1.5bn or 135p a share (roughly equating to double its current share price of around 75p).

Last week the price per tonne of copper (Cu) bucked expectations by briefly reaching a new two year high of just over $6,500 (£5,074), which could act as a further incentive for UK telecoms operators to remove their old cables in favour of fibre optic (e.g. FTTP) infrastructure. If only it were so simple.

Transport for London (TfL) has today awarded Capita the contract to design and roll-out key parts of a new 4G (mobile) based Emergency Services Network (ESN) throughout the London Underground, which will be used by the police, fire, rescue and ambulance teams to communicate during any incidents that may require their attention.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today published a brief trading update to 30th June 2020 (Q1 FY21 financial), which saw them add (net) another 67,000 customers to their “fibre” (mostly FTTC) broadband base in the quarter (vs 118K in Q1 FY20). We also get an update on their “full fibre” FTTP launch plan for Openreach and Cityfibre products.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which has already deployed their FTTP/B broadband network to well over 400,000 UK premises (mostly large apartment blocks), has today extended their option of a rolling 30 day contract term to include business packages for the first time (i.e. customers now get contract options of 30 days or 12 – 24 months).

New crowd-sourced based research from benchmarking firm umlaut (formerly P3) has claimed that more than 90% of the UK’s active fixed broadband ISP lines deliver internet connection speeds that “meet the challenges of working from home,” at least with respect to the narrow scope of video conferencing apps.

Business broadband ISP HighNet has revealed that an unspecific investment from Shawbrook Bank has enabled the company to be “fully business as usual” during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, while at the same time continuing to fuel its growth by investing in new hardware and additional IP addresses.

The Government and Indian conglomerate Bharti Global have today made a successful £800m ($1bn) bid to acquire the British-registered space company OneWeb, which will see the UK invest £400m ($500m) in order to help build a new global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast broadband and possibly GPS.

A recent analysis of the latest data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), which was conducted by tax relief consultancy Catax, has revealed that business investment in the UK telecoms sector has held mostly steady, falling by only 0.6% in a year, as the Coronavirus crisis hit.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that, as part of their rapid UK roll-out of “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology in Northern Ireland, they are going to recruit a further 100 engineers before the end of March 2021.

Customers of UK ISP Origin Broadband are to be offered a new Pay TV service after IPTV supplier Netgem TV announced that it had just launched their “largest deployment deal to date” with the internet provider, which is being bundled alongside their broadband and phone packages with prices from £12.99 per month.

The UK Government will reportedly invest around £500m (equity) into British-registered space company OneWeb as part of a wider private-sector consortium bid. The firm has been busy building a global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast broadband, but as part of the deal it may have to deliver GPS too.
