Mobile firm O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced a curious new partnership with high street fashion chain NEXT, which will see the operator trial pop-up stores (Shop-in-Shop) in four of NEXT’s superstores across the country (Warrington Gemini, Southampton Hedge End, Swindon Orbital and Nottingham Giltbrook).

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has announced that they’ve managed to create 350 new jobs in the North West as part of a recent recruitment drive, which formed the backdrop for the relocation of their HQ from London to Salford (Manchester) in order to support the next phase of their growth and cut costs.

Low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk is facing the prospect of a “landmark” legal case by one of its former Programme Directors, Rebecca Burke, who is crowd-funding to bring an equal pay claim against them after she was allegedly paid “40% less salary and 50% less bonus” than three other male colleges that were “in my team doing the same job.”

Urban “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP Hyperoptic has today announced that the global investment firm KKR has completed the acquisition of a majority stake in the provider from funds managed by Newlight Partners LP and the Mubadala Investment Company. Sadly financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Private equity firm Equistone has reportedly expressed an interest in acquiring a controlling stake in business broadband ISP XLN Telecom, which is said to be valued at around £200m and has attracted interest from several other parties since unofficially hoisting the ‘for sale’ sign earlier this year.

Fixed Wireless Access ISP Lothian Broadband, which covers remote rural parts of East Lothian and Mid Lothian in Scotland, has announced that their fledgling roll-out of an ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the East Lothian village of Gifford is being extended to reach many more homes and businesses.

Sources have informed us that the Portsmouth City Council will award Cityfibre the £3.8m (public funding) Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) contract to rollout a new “gigabit-capable” Ethernet and broadband network across the south coast city (inc. nearby areas), which aims to connect public sector sites.

A new Openreach commissioned report, created by the Centre for Economics & Business Research (CEBR), has estimated that connecting the whole of the UK to a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by the end of 2025 could result in a £59bn economic boost (equivalent to £1,700+ per worker) – rising to £70bn by 2038.

A new survey of 135 Somerset-based firms, which was undertaken online by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce in partnership with local rural “full fibre” broadband ISP Truespeed, has claimed that 42% of businesses still don’t have access to “fibre broadband” and half of respondents suffered daily or weekly drop-outs in service.

Earlier this year we reported that fibre builder Full Fibre Limited had tentative plans to expand a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network (here) to reach “rural and semi-urban areas” around Devon, Surrey, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. The build is now underway.

The Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which offers up to £2,500 to help businesses and homes gain access to a 1Gbps capable ISP connection, appears to have been so successful that there’s now just £20.4m remaining for eligible users (i.e. it’ll run out of money well before 31st March 2021).

ISP Cerberus Networks has today become the first UK internet provider to offer climate-neutral and climate-positive broadband services under their ‘Net Zero Broadband Carbon Offset‘ programme, which means that customers can automatically offset the carbon emissions associated with their service.

UK ISP Virgin Media Business has won the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract for Belfast in Northern Ireland, which will see more than 200 public sector sites being linked up by a new Gigabit-capable data network. The move should also complement Virgin Media’s 1Gbps DOCSIS 3.1 broadband rollout for homes.
