A new study, which examined the economic impact of broadband connectivity among 35 OECD countries between 2002 to 2016, has found that a rise in broadband adoption and speeds over the period led to an increase in UK GDP of 0.47% per annum on average (cumulative total of 6.7% over the period).

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced a new contract with SSE Enterprise Telecoms, which will initially see the latter facilitating fibre optic connections to 20 of the mobile operator’s core data centres. The deal helps to enhance capacity for their existing 4G network and prepare it for 5G.

London-based UK ISP Luminet has secured a development focused capital funding boost of £3m from the Foresight Group, which is an independent infrastructure and private equity investment firm. The extra funding will be used to grow their customer base, boost marketing and improve the network.

Fibre optic (FTTP/H) network builder Cityfibre has announced that they’ve agreed the terms of a recommended £537.8m cash acquisition by Connect Infrastructure Bidco Limited (Bidco), which is a newly-incorporated company that is jointly-owned by a consortium of two key infrastructure investors.

The UK government supported National Digital Infrastructure Fund has made its first big investment by putting £18m into Community Fibre, which aspires to bring 1Gbps “full fibre” broadband to more than 500,000 premises across London by 2022. Existing investor Railpen has also put in £7m.

BT has announced that they’ve today merged their ‘Business and Public Sector‘ and ‘Wholesale and Ventures‘ divisons in the UK and Republic of Ireland into a single unit – BT Enterprise. The operator stated that this move would “simplify its operating model” and “strengthen accountabilities.”

The UK telecoms regulator has announced that they will NOT attempt to reintroduce a “temporary remedy” for Dark Fibre Access, which would have required BT (Openreach) to provide a restricted form of DFA in the leased line (Ethernet) markets for the period until March 2019. But DFA will be tried again.

The business division of residential ISP TalkTalk, which is naturally called TalkTalk Business, has announced that they’ve started a trial of 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband technology for Wholesale and Partner customers. The commercial launch will then follow sometime this “summer“.

Business internet provider Elite claims to have recently lit more than 100,000 postcodes on their new Dark Fibre fed network, starting in London, for the United Kingdom’s “lowest cost Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet,” with an additional 60,000 to come in the next 4-6 months.
